Six University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Nursing faculty members and alumni have been named Fellows of the American Academy of Nursing. They join more than 125 FAANs affiliated with the School.
This year’s faculty inductees include Susanne Fogger, DNP, PMHNP-BC, CARN-AP, FAANP, Grace Grau, DNP, APRN, ACNP-BC, AACC (DNP 2015), and Lindsey Harris, DNP, RN, FNP-BC (MSN 2011, DNP 2016).
The UAB School of Nursing alumni inductees include Timiya S. Nolan, PhD, APRN-CNP, ANP-BC (BSN 2008, MSN 2011, PhD 2016), Mo-Kyung Sin, PhD, RN, FGSA (PhD 2001), and Pauline Swiger, PhD, RN, CNL, CMSRN (PhD 2017).
The American Academy of Nursing will induct more than 250 nurse leaders into its 2023 Class of Fellows during a conference in October.
Susanne Fogger, DNP, PMHNP-BC, CARN-AP, FAANP
Fogger is a Professor of Nursing with more than 45 years of experience as a psychiatric/mental health nurse. She is a veteran of the US Air Force with more than 12 years as a psychiatric staff nurse and nurse manager of an alcohol treatment unit. She provided psychiatric home health in a rural area of Louisiana as well as managed a psychiatric adolescent unit. She has taught Graduate and Undergraduate Psychiatric Nursing since 2003 while maintaining a clinical practice. In her clinical practice, she has been caring for patients with HIV since 2011 at the UAB 1917 HIV outpatient clinic. Fogger also provided psychiatric care to patients with chronic pain at Cooper Green Mercy Health Services. Fogger is credentialed as a certified advanced practice addictions nurse. She is the Co-Editor of the latest American Nurse’s Association’s Scope and Standards for Addictions Nursing Practice. She is a Fellow of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners and is a Sig-Co Chair. She also is the President of the International Nurses Society on Addictions-USA and the Treasurer for the International Nurses Society on Addiction.
Grace Grau, DNP, APRN, ACNP-BC, AACC (DNP 2015)
Grau is an Adjunct Assistant Professor with the School’s Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. She started at UAB as an Instructor in 2011 and was later promoted to Assistant Professor, holding a dual appointment as faculty at the School in the Adult Gero Acute Care Nurse Practitioner Track and as a Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner at UAB Medicine in the department of Structural Heart and Interventional Cardiology. Grau is the 2023 recipient of the National Association of Hispanic Nurses President’s Award and serves on the NAHN Board of Directors. In 2021, Grau received NAHN’s Janie Menchaca Wilson Leadership Award, recognizing her leadership contributions and positive impact on the Hispanic community. Grau is the founding president the Alabama Chapter of the National Association of Hispanic Nurses.
Lindsey Harris, DNP, RN, FNP-BC (MSN 2011, DNP 2016)
Harris is Adjunct Faculty in the School and is completing a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Health Policy Fellowship in Washington. Harris was the first African American President of the Alabama State Nurses Association and is a past president of the Birmingham Black Nurses Association Inc. In 2011, Harris was recognized as NBNA Staff Nurse of the Year, received the NBNA Advanced Practice Nurse of the Year award in 2015, and was recognized in 2016 as a member of the next generation of nursing leaders with the NBNA 45 under 40 Award. In 2021, she was named one of the School’s 70 Visionary Leaders.
Timiya S. Nolan, PhD, APRN-CNP, ANP-BC (BSN 2008, MSN 2011, PhD 2016)
Nolan is a three-time alumna of the School and is Associate Director for Community Outreach & Engagement at the O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center at UAB and Associate Professor in the Division of Preventive Medicine in the UAB Heersink School of Medicine. She completed postdoctoral training in cancer prevention and health disparities at The Ohio State University. Nolan studied breast cancer survivorship disparities in young and African American populations alongside the late Karen Meneses, PhD, RN, FAAN. The National Institutes of Health Scientific Workforce Diversity office also recognized Nolan as a Future Research Leader in 2017. In 2023, the National Minority Quality Forum selected Nolan for its 40 Under 40 Leaders in Minority Health.
Mo-Kyung Sin, PhD, RN, FGSA (PhD 2001)
Sin is a Professor at Seattle University College of Nursing. In 2022, she received her second National Institutes of Health grant in two years for research on risk factors associated with cognitive decline in older adults. She earned her PhD from the UAB School of Nursing in 2001.
Pauline Swiger, PhD, RN, CNL, CMSRN (PhD 2017)
Swiger is Chief of Nursing Research at Madigan Army Medical Center and the Consultant to the Army Surgeon General for Nursing Research. Swiger oversees two groups of doctorally prepared staff who focus on nursing research and on applying evidence-based best practices to improve the U.S. Army’s operations and deliver an unsurpassed level of health care. In 2019, Swiger was recognized with a military nursing practice award for her career-long contributions to the field of nursing and patient care delivery.
