C. Ann Gakumo, PhD, RN, Assistant Professor in the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Nursing, has been selected by the UAB Black Student Awareness Committee as the recipient of the Most Outstanding Black Faculty Member for the 2014-2015 school year.Gakumo will be honored at the upcoming Black Excellence Gala at the UAB National Alumni Society House. Gakumo was nominated by one of her mentees for her work within the black community, demonstrating a record of community and school involvement and her exceptional leadership.
Gakumo earned her PhD in Nursing from UAB in 2009. She is nationally known for her research in addressing health disparities and low health literacy in vulnerable populations. She was recently named one of 12 nurse educators from across the country to receive the prestigious Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Nurse Faculty Scholar Award. He project with RWJF involves testing a health literacy-based intervention on medication adherence in older African Americans with HIV. In addition to her research, she has made significant contributions in advancing health literacy initiatives into health professional education.
Focused on sharing and celebrating the rich cultural heritage of Africa with all students, regardless of historical background, the UAB Black Student Awareness Committee sponsors activities that are both educational and entertaining, while pertaining to the vision of public knowledge and understanding of black culture.
