University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Nursing Associate Professor and the Director of the MSN Nurse-Midwifery Pathway Sharon Holley, DNP, CNM, FACNM, FAAN (MSN 1996), has received the American College of Nurse-Midwives Excellence in Teaching Award. The award honors someone who has shown outstanding qualities for teaching, who has inspired students to excel and who repeatedly promoted high standards of midwifery education.
“Receiving this award is truly an honor and I am very humbled to receive this recognition,” Holley said. “Over the years of teaching nurse-midwifery students I have loved watching them grow and develop their passion into excellence in practice as well as overall professional development. This national recognition from my peers means a great deal to me and educating the future workforce for nurse-midwifery is a passion of mine. I can’t believe how lucky I am to have worked with so many wonderful students who have gone on to do great work in the world.”
Holley is an Associate Professor and the Director of the MSN Nurse-Midwifery Pathway, which returned to the School in fall 2022. Holley is a graduate of the first iteration of UAB’s nurse-midwife program in 1996. In 2016, Holley was named a Fellow of the American College of Nurse-Midwives. In 2022, Holley was named a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing.
“Coming back to the School to lead the nurse-midwifery education pathway reopening has been a dream of mine for a long time,” Holley said. “The School has faculty and resources that are top notch and offer our current nurse-midwifery students opportunities that will help grow and develop them into excellent clinicians ready to improve the maternal-infant care workforce in Alabama and the South.”
Holley received the award during the ACNM annual meeting in May 2023.
