UAB School of Nursing faculty honored by NPAA

NPAA-gold22Ten UAB School of Nursing faculty have been honored by the Nurse Practitioner Alliance of Alabama (NPAA) at the alliance's convention earlier this fall for their innovation, research, service and advocacy in advanced nursing practice.

Those honored, according to the alliance, are making a difference in the lives of patients and students, and as recognition for delivering and advocating for outstanding patient care.

They are:

  • Outstanding Nurse Practitioner of the Year Award for the Central Alabama Region – Assistant Professor D’Ann Somerall, DNP, CRNP, FNP-BC
  • Outstanding Advocacy Award – Visiting Assistant Professor Kathleen Ladner Ph.D., RN and Carol Ratcliff, DNP, RN (Samford University Ida V. Moffett School of Nursing faculty) were cited for their leadership with the Alabama Health Action Coalition (AL-HAC) and the work they have done this past year on behalf of nurse practitioner issues in Alabama.
  • A team of faculty nurse practitioners who are providing services at the school’s PATH Clinic at M-POWER Ministries received a special service award. These are: Assistant Professor Joy Deupree, Ph.D., CRNP, WHNP-BC, who has been the President of NPAA for the past 2 years, was recognized for her service. 
  • Associate Professor Lygia Holcomb, DSN, CRNP, FNP-BC
  • Assistant Professor Darnell Mompoint-Williams, DNP, CRNP, ANP-BC
  • Instructor Brenda Iddins, DNP, CRNP, FNP-BC
  • Instructor Karmie Johnson, MSN, CRNP, PMHNP-BC
  • Instructor Michele Talley, MSN, CRNP, ACNP-BC
  • Adjunct Instructor Timiya Nolan, MSN, CRNP, ANP-BC
  • Assistant Professor Joy Deupree, Ph.D., CRNP, WHNP-BC, who has been the President of NPAA for the past 2 years, was recognized for her service. 
  • Instructor Bryan Combs, MSN, FNP-BC, CNL, ATC, received first place for his research poster “Prescribing Proper Orthopedic Care.”


The Nurse Practitioner Alliance of Alabama (NPAA) seeks to improve access to safe, high-quality, cost-effective health care for Alabama's citizens. Nurse Practitioners are advanced practice nurses who provide health care services similar to those of a physician.
