I chose UAB because
To this day, I feel indebted to Birmingham for the wonderful life the city has provided my family. Other colleges may have been considered, but I struggled with the idea of leaving the city after taking advantage of everything it has offered. I experienced a delightful childhood filled with amazing friends, great education, financial stability, and every opportunity to grow as a human. Utilizing my scholarship and potential medical opportunities at UAB, I hope to remain in Birmingham somewhat longer to better the community that has given me so much. Moreover, UAB’s Honors programs, engaging professors, research opportunities, and campus organizations were all significant factors in deciding to attend the institution. This university is always expanding and renovating, furthering the quality of education and opportunities available to students. Overall, I think UAB provides a great path to my desired career, and if I choose to stay in this city when I enter my profession, I believe I could make a notable impact on the people of Birmingham.
Biggest college/adult related fear you have overcome at UAB?
As is the case with many people, I feared having to push past my comfort zone to make whole new friend circles. I am very fortunate in that my childhood friends continue to be my best friends to this day, but attending different universities means we cannot see each other as often. A few close friends came to UAB with me, so it was challenging to enter new friend groups apart from them. In the first couple weeks and eventually months of freshman year, connecting with friends of other friends and joining new organizations organically provided me with new social circles.
