Medicine is a big deal for us here at UAB — a really big deal. But we're also pretty well known in other academic disciplines, too. Which is why our Joint UAB Heersink School of Medicine Programs are so popular. These programs team leading health-care experts with leading experts in other areas. Together, they can prepare you for a research or health-care career that could be, well, a big deal.

Biomedical Engineering

UAB Heersink School of Medicine | School of Engineering

Biomedical engineers play important roles in modern health care—from diagnosis and analysis to treatment and recovery. Things like implants (such as pacemakers and artificial hips), stem cells, and other technologies exist thanks to biomedical engineers. At UAB, our BME department is pretty good. After all, we rank fifth in the nation for research funding from the National Institutes of Health. So actually, very good.

Bioinformatics

UAB Heersink School of Medicine | College of Arts & Sciences

Bioinformatics connects biological sciences, genetics, chemistry, computer science, data science, IT, engineering, applied mathematics, biostatistics, computing, and biomedical engineering. Basically, a whole lot of info is crammed into your brain so you can help treat disease and improve lives. And we’re the first undergraduate bioinformatics program in Alabama. So, not too shabby.

Cancer Biology

UAB Heersink School of Medicine | College of Arts & Sciences

As the only university in the U.S. with a cancer biology undergraduate program, UAB is the perfect place for you to prepare for a career in research, treatment, and other areas. The fact that we’re home to a 90-ton cyclotron (one of a few in America) to zap cancer cells with precision, well, that doesn’t hurt your education either.

Genetics and Genomic Sciences

UAB Heersink School of Medicine | College of Arts & Sciences

Genetics and genomics make up the informational blueprint of life. Understanding that blueprint can answer a lot—and we mean a lot—of questions. There are only a few universities across the nation that offer a program to help you answer those questions. And we’re one of them. From research to training to education, we have the tools to help you achieve your career goals.

Immunology

UAB Heersink School of Medicine | College of Arts & Sciences

Immunology is the study of the structure and function of the immune system at the molecular, cellular, and physiological level. In other words, you know that army of antibodies in your body that fights off disease? Our job is to teach you what makes it tick. We cover biology, microbiology, chemistry, physics—the whole gamut. No wonder U.S. News & World Report ranked us No. 27 in the “Best Global Universities for Immunology” poll for showing “strength in producing research related to immunology.”

Neuroscience

UAB Heersink School of Medicine | College of Arts & Sciences

It takes brains to study neuroscience. After all, it’s the most rapidly advancing field of research and training out there right now. Oh, and neuroscience is literally the study of the structure and function of the nervous system with a special focus on the brain. So yeah, you kind of have to be, you know, brainy.
