The Heersink School of Medicine celebrates Armed Forces Week in May, a testament to the courage, sacrifice, and unwavering dedication of military personnel.

Armed Forces Week is typically the third week in May and serves as a time to reflect on the profound contributions of military health care professionals.

Yu-Hua Dean Fang, Ph.D., associate professor in the Division of Advanced Medical Imaging Research, and adjunct faculty of Neurology, and Steven Rothenberg, M.D., assistant professor of Diagnostic Radiology, an associate scientist at the Center for Clinical and Translational Science (CCTS), and director of the imaging informatics fellowship program, have taken over leadership of the Artificial Intelligence in Imaging (AII) group as co-directors. This group meets monthly to discuss AI research and clinical implementation of AI, invite vendor presentations and develop research pathways for AI in imaging.

The UAB Department of Radiology is pleased to announce leadership role changes in the Human Imaging Core (HUMI).

Stefanie Woodard, D.O., interim section chief of breast imaging and intervention, recently visited Jakarta, Indonesia for the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA)'s Global Learning Center (GLC) program. 

Anna Sorace, Ph.D., director of the Small Animal Imaging Facility and associate professor in Advanced Medical Imaging Research, will assume the role of division director of Advanced Medical Imaging Research, effective February 1, 2024.

Desiree E. Morgan, M.D., professor and vice chair for faculty affairs in the Department of Radiology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), has been appointed to the American Board of Radiology’s (ABR) Board of Governors.

Mary Beth Oglesby, M.D., co-chief of the diagnostic radiology residency program, joined Matthew Larrison, M.D., professor in the musculoskeletal section, his wife Nancy Larrison, and her co-worker, Nancy Collins, who are both sonographers at an obstetrics and gynecology clinic, for a week at Tenwek Hospital in Bomet, Kenya. They traveled with the organization Hope Imaging, where Larrison is the executive director, and with the support of World Medical Mission and Samaritan's Purse. 

It is with a heavy heart that we share the passing of Eva V. Dubovsky, M.D., Ph.D., who passed away on Saturday, July 29th. She was a remarkable woman and accomplished physician who made so many lives better, including patients, trainees, and colleagues. She will be missed. 

Cheri Canon, M.D., FACR, will transition from the role of Chief Clinical Officer for the UAB Medicine ambulatory practice to the role of UAB Health System Chief Clinical Integration Officer.

The Department of Radiology continues to grow and evolve, and as a result, has made some exciting changes to leadership roles including a new Diagnostic Radiology program director, vice chair of education, and vice chair of faculty affairs. 

 Meet UAB Radiology alumnus Warren Goldstein. We asked him questions about his past, future, and what working in Radiology means to him. 

Meet Jill Rutherford, senior partner at Vulcan Imaging Associates and UAB Radiology alumni. We asked her questions about her past, future, and what working in Radiology means to her. 

Jordan Perchik, M.D., abdominal imaging and informatics fellow, directed the Artificial Intelligence (AI) Literacy Course, a free one-week course covering lectures on fundamental terms and applications of AI in radiology. The course began to address a need for AI education in the radiology residency curriculum, with the goal of bringing practical and accessible AI education to radiology trainees around the world. After starting the course in 2020, the program has grown from a single institution at UAB to reach participants in over 25 programs across the United States and 10 countries.

The Heersink Institute for Biomedical Innovation recently called for applications for the Heersink Institute Innovation Fellows Program. A total of nine applicants from across UAB were accepted into the program, with five from the Department of Radiology. The purpose of the program is for Innovation Fellows to apply the entrepreneurial mindset to their discipline and academic area. The 2022 Heersink Innovation Fellows from Radiology are as follows:
