The UAB Department of Radiology is pleased to announce leadership roles in the Interventional Radiology Division. 

Andrew J. Gunn, M.D., will assume the roles of vice chair of intervention and division director for Interventional Radiology, effective November 10, 2023.

Dr. Caridi set us on an excellent course and I am looking forward to working with this team to improve care for our patients and the education that we provide our learners,” said Gunn. “Thank you to Dr. Canon and department leadership for entrusting me with this position.”

Gunn graduated magna cum laude from Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah earning a Bachelor of Science degree in exercise physiology with a minor in sociology. He then returned home to South Dakota to attend medical school at the University of South Dakota. During medical school, he participated in the competitive Howard Hughes Medical Institute – National Institutes of Health Research Scholars Program and was awarded the Donald L. Alcott, M.D. Award for Clinical Promise. He graduated summa cum laude in 2009. He completed his Diagnostic Radiology residency at the Massachusetts General Hospital of Harvard Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts followed by a fellowship in vascular and Interventional Radiology at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland where he served as chief fellow.

Prior to joining the faculty at UAB, Gunn worked as an attending interventional radiologist at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. He has written and lectured nationally regarding image-guided therapies for cancer (including chemoembolization, radioembolization, and percutaneous ablation), uterine fibroid embolization, bariatric embolization, image-guided therapies for trauma, IVC filter retrieval, and patient-centered care in radiology. He is active in leadership positions within national societies, including the Society of Interventional Radiology.

Aliaksei Salei, M.D., will take over as director of operations, overseeing the UAB Heart and Vascular Center (HVC) and coordinating care across our multiple sites. He will continue as director of quality and patient safety for the division. We thank him for his important role as interim division director; his leadership was key in this transition.

“I am grateful for the opportunity to have served as the interim Interventional Radiology Division Director. I am confident Dr. Gunn will do an excellent job as a new division director and vice chair of interventional affairs,” said Salei. “I am excited to continue serving as a director of operations for Interventional Radiology.”

Salei completed his medical school at Belarusian State Medical University in Minsk, Belarus. After finishing his Diagnostic Radiology residency at Mercy Catholic Medical Center in Pennsylvania, he completed his fellowship at UAB. Salei then joined the Interventional Radiology faculty. His areas of clinical interest are oncologic interventions (chemoembolization, radioembolization and ablation), prostatic artery embolization, portal hypertension interventions, as well as kyphoplasty and interventional pain management. His role in quality oversight for the division has had significant impact on patient care.

 Junjian Huang, M.D., will take over as the director of ambulatory services, where he will be responsible for operations at The Kirklin Clinic while also being point on growth toward Highlands and future offsite labs.

“I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to serve in the inaugural role of director of ambulatory services. Growth and practice building are paramount to the long term success of our division, and I am elated to have the chance to help expand our scope and reach”, said Huang. “I am thrilled to work alongside great colleagues as we move forward.”

Huang graduated cum laude from Emory and obtained his medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia. He is alumnus of Mayo Surgery, Penn Radiology, and MGH Interventional Radiology. He joined the faculty at UAB in 2020 and has served as the director of medical student research, director of IR clinical research, and director of HVC IR. His immense practice growth in the field of musculoskeletal interventions and advanced image guided pain interventions has been recognized locally and nationally.
