The UAB Department of Radiology is pleased to announce leadership role changes in the Human Imaging Core (HUMI).
Samuel Galgano, M.D., vice chair of quality and patient experience, chief of the abdominal imaging section and associate professor of the abdominal imaging and molecular imaging and therapeutics sections will assume the role of the Human Imaging (HUMI) Core Facility Director. Dr. Galgano has been associate director of the HUMI for over five years and has extensive experience in all aspects of its function, particularly our robust Tumor Metrics program.
Galgano completed his undergraduate training and medical school at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. He then completed his residency training in Diagnostic Radiology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, during which he acted as chief resident in his final year. He completed fellowships in both molecular imaging and therapeutics as well as abdominal imaging at the University of Alabama at Birmingham prior to joining the faculty.
Clinically, Dr. Galgano is a member of the abdominal imaging and molecular imaging and therapeutics sections with expertise in CT, ultrasound, MRI, fluoroscopy, PET/CT, and PET/MRI. His research interests include novel radiotracer use in PET/CT and PET/MRI for applications in genitourinary and gastrointestinal oncology with particular interest in prostate cancer, pancreatic cancer, and hepatocellular carcinoma. He is a regular member of the multidisciplinary colorectal, pancreaticobiliary, genitourinary, and hepatobiliary tumor boards and serves on the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center Protocol Review Committee and Gastrointestinal, Genitourinary, and Skin and Soft Tissue Malignancies Working Groups.
He is excited to assume the role and working closely with the rest of the HUMI staff in years to come.
Elainea Smith, M.D., director of the Abdominal Imaging Fellowship Program, co-director of the Women's Imaging Fellowship Program, and assistant professor in the abdominal imaging section, will assume the role of HUMI associate director and be responsible for tumor metrics and O’Neal Center Protocol Review Committee (PRC) reviews.
Smith completed her undergraduate degree at Colorado College and medical school at LSU Health Sciences Center in Shreveport, Louisiana. She then completed her residency training in Diagnostic Radiology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, during which she assumed the role of chief resident during her final year. She completed her accelerated fellowship in abdominal imaging at the University of Alabama at Birmingham prior to joining the faculty.
Clinically, she practices a full spectrum of abdominal imaging including fluoroscopy, CT, MR, US, and non-vascular procedures. Her areas of interest include hepatobiliary imaging, most specifically diffuse liver disease, DEI activities, and medical student outreach in order to recruit more applicants into the field of radiology. She serves on the Society of Abdominal Radiology Li-Rads Post Treatment Response Working Group, Diffuse Liver Disease Focused Panel, and Early Career Committee. .
Steven Rothenberg, M.D., is an assistant professor of Diagnostic Radiology, an associate scientist at the Center for Clinical and Translational Science (CCTS), and director of the imaging informatics fellowship program. He will assume the role of HUMI director of bulk image de-identification service line. Rothenberg has participated in numerous AI projects which require cohort determination and image de-identification.
Rothenberg received his Bachelors in Physics from the University of Maryland, College Park, and matriculated into medical school at George Washington University through the Early Assurance program. He completed his residency in Diagnostic Radiology and Fellowship training in Imaging Informatics at the University of Maryland Medical Center. After his second year of radiology training, he pursued an industry sabbatical and founded EnvoyAI (formerly McCoy Medical Technologies) – the world’s first radiology AI marketplace, which was fully acquired by TeraRecon. After the acquisition he returned to complete residency and joined faculty at Maryland prior to his appointment at UAB Radiology.
Rothenberg is a serial entrepreneur on a mission to unlock value by connecting key stakeholders to progress novel and impactful technologies to transform healthcare. His research interests include imaging informatics, opportunistic population health screening, and neuroscience.
We want to thank Andrew Smith, M.D., Ph.D., vice chair of innovation and professor in the abdominal imaging section, for his work as the director of HUMI and his dedication and service to the department. We wish him well as he becomes the new chair of the Department of Radiology at St Jude Children's Research Hospital. He will remain within the department as an adjunct professor to continue with his collaborative research efforts.
