The UAB Department of Radiology has a long tradition of providing leading edge clinical imaging for patients. Our physicians and staff provide continuous support for our inpatient and outpatient facilities, including the state’s only American College of Surgeons certified adult Level I trauma center.
Diagnostic imaging services for UAB Medicine are provided at UAB Hospital, the Kirklin Clinic of UAB Hospital, the Kirklin Clinic at Acton Road, UAB-Medicine Leeds, UAB Highlands Hospital, and UAB-Medicine Gardendale Primary and Specialty Care including the Gardendale Freestanding Emergency Department, using state of the art magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computed tomography (CT), ultrasound, conventional radiography, mammography, and radionuclide/molecular imaging. Our equipment inventory comprises a wide variety of MRI units, CT scanners, ultrasound machines, and a full complement of fluoroscopy and nuclear medicine/molecular imaging technologies, including special hybrid systems: SPECT/CT, PET/CT, and PET/MRI. In addition there are sophisticated digital image-viewing systems which allow immediate review of images throughout the institution. Other equipment highlights include dual energy CT for improved characterization of pathology, functional MRI, extremity MRI, sophisticated 3D post processing software for neuroradiology, cardiac, and vascular imaging, and full service breast MRI with MR guided biopsy capability. Diagnostic and therapeutic angiographic and interventional procedures performed in the department and the adjacent UAB Heart and Vascular center include the latest in biopsy and ablative technologies. For breast Imaging, three full field digital mammography units (units include contrast enhanced mammography and breast tomographic capability), a stereotactic biopsy table, and three dedicated ultrasound machines are located in our breast imaging facility, which has received the Breast Imaging Centers of Excellence designation by the American College of Radiology.
