Mary Beth Oglesby, M.D., co-chief of the diagnostic radiology residency program, joined Matthew Larrison, M.D., professor in the musculoskeletal section, his wife Nancy Larrison, and her co-worker, Nancy Collins, who are both sonographers at an obstetrics and gynecology clinic, for a week at Tenwek Hospital in Bomet, Kenya. They traveled with the organization Hope Imaging, where Larrison is the executive director, and with the support of World Medical Mission and Samaritan's Purse. 

​​​The group spent a week teaching nine family medicine residents how to perform and interpret point-of-care ultrasound, specifically focusing on obstetric, renal and biliary exams. They also worked alongside Dr. Jonathan Swanson who completed a point-of-care ultrasound fellowship at UAB and is now working as an emergency medicine physician at Tenwek through World Medical Missions post-residency program. 

"It was wonderful to work with this impressive group of joyful, dedicated residents and see their progress throughout the week" said Oglesby. 

Oglesby stayed an additional week to work alongside an abdominal radiologist from the University of Wisconsin, Dr. Michael Hartung, interpreting CT scans performed at the hospital, troubleshooting ultrasound exams, helping teach residents how to perform ultrasound-guided biopsies and fielding consults from clinicians.
