childersMeet Daniel Childers. We asked him questions about his past, future, and what working in Radiology means to him.

What is your name and title?

Daniel Childers, M.D.

What is your background at UAB?

I was in the UAB Radiology Residency Program from 2016 to 2020 and served as chief resident during my 4th year.

Why did you choose UAB?

UAB has a wonderful reputation. The residents seemed happy, fun, and smart. UAB has world-renown faculty, which have had a profound influence on my career. There are too many to name that have influenced me, but specifically, I hope to be like Kevin Smith whenever I grow up.

Can you provide a brief work history and where you are currently?

After completing residency training in 2020, I did a one year abdominal imaging fellowship at MGH and then joined an independent private practice in Kansas City in the summer of 2021. I’m in the same practice and made partner earlier this year. I spend about 50% of my time reading abdominal imaging and 50% of my time in general radiology. I’m the abdominal imaging section chief and have recently been elected to my group’s board of directors.

What encouraged you to become a physician?

A genuine desire to have a career in service to others, a fascination with science and the human body, and a stable career.

What do you consider the biggest success of your career?

Being able to make a difference in patient’s lives and helping to direct clinical management of patients.

What is one piece of advice you would give to current residents, fellows and/or new faculty?

For trainees, read as many cases as possible and take as many cases in conference as possible. Knowing the literature is important, but you truly learn by doing. This is the only time in your career you can practice under someone else’s license and make mistakes. Take the opportunity to read hard cases and learn by doing.
