Last month, UAB was the meeting place for a global gathering of Air Force Rescue personnel. Hosted by the Division of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery, the Pararescue Medical Operations Advisory Board meeting is held annually to discuss the progress and future of the medical training aspect of the Air Force Pararescuemen, or PJs as they’re commonly known.

The International Thyroid Oncology Group (ITOG) Board of Directors has selected Fay Fletcher Kerner Endowed Chair Herbert Chen, M.D., FACS, and Assistant Professor Renata Jaskula-Sztul, Ph.D., as the 2021 Robert F. Gagel ITOG Discovery Award recipients.

Division of Gastrointestinal Surgery Professor and Vice Chair of Perioperative Services Melanie Morris, M.D., FACS, FASCRS, was elected to the Marnix E. Heersink School of Medicine (HSOM) Faculty Council, effective January 2022.

The UAB Comprehensive Transplant Institute (CTI) has released its 2021 Annual Report for patients, providers, and the public to review. The report details the accomplishments of 2021 and is dedicated to the late Arnold Diethelm, M.D., a pioneer of transplantation.

Division of Breast and Endocrine Surgery Assistant Professor Renata Jaskula-Sztul, Ph.D., has won her third NIH R21 grant in two years. The newest R21 grant will fund her project, “Targeted neuroendocrine cancer therapy using Verrucarin A.”

Division of Surgical Oncology Assistant Professor and Section Chief of Melanoma/Sarcoma Surgery Ashley Holder, M.D., FACS, has been named the recipient of the one of the most prominent awards in surgical research. Holder was awarded the 2022 American College of Surgeons’ George H. A. Clowes, Jr., M.D., FACS, Memorial Research Career Development Award.

General Surgery Administrative Chief Resident Rindi Uhlich, M.D., MSPH, was awarded the dedication award from the Legacy of Hope.

Chief of the Section of Melanoma and Sarcoma Surgery, Ashley Holder, M.D., FACS, has been awarded a two-year Melanoma Research Foundation (MRF) Career Development Award to support research efforts in the Holder Lab.
