The UAB Department of Surgery is passionate about mentoring and training the next generation of surgeons. We believe strongly that the training program is at the heart of any great department. We also provide continuing medical education resources to help physicians gain knowledge throughout their careers.
High Schoolers and Undergraduates
The UAB Department of Surgery offers educational opportunities for both high schoolers and undergraduates via our summer research programs. Our Pre-College Research Internship for Scholarship and Mentoring (PRISM) and Future Surgeons and Scientists Investigating Oncology (FUSSION) programs provide promising high school and undergraduate students who are interested in careers in healthcare with hands-on research experience under the mentorship of UAB surgeons.
Medical Students
Our department provides third- and fourth-year medical students with exposure to a number of surgical subspecialties via our clerkship, acting internship and summer research programs. These programs help students acquire clinical knowledge regarding surgical-related diseases and skills that prove valuable in more disciplines than just surgery.
Residents and Fellows
The UAB Department of Surgery boasts numerous residency programs and fellowship programs in a variety of specialties, many of which integrate to provide trainees with multidisciplinary experiences that prepare them for a range of surgical specialties. Each of our residency and fellowship programs provides our trainees with tailored clinical experiences and unique opportunities for specialization. Formal research training opportunities in a broad range of topics are available to residents and fellows. This includes an NIH-funded UAB Surgical Oncology Research Training Program, which supports a two-year research fellowship in cancer research.
Practicing Physicians
UAB Surgery is committed to life-long learning and provides numerous opportunities for our faculty, trainees and alumni to participate in continuing medical education such as our video courses on the MD Learning Channel, our faculty podcasts on MedCast and our annual one-and-a-half-day general surgery CME course.
