The ASC consists of three developmental training seminars which are the SUS Mid-Career Academic Surgery Professional Development Course, the AAS/SUS Surgical Investigators’ Course, and The Grant Writing Workshop.

The Grant Writing Workshop will take place Jan. 30-31. On the first day of the workshop, Jayme Locke, M.D., MPH, will discuss “Conveying, Significance, and Innovation.” On the second day of the workshop, Daniel Chu, M.D., will execute a discussion entitled “Where Can I Find Local or Regional Grant Opportunities?” Vikas Dudeja, M.D., will wrap up the workshop with his discussion entitled “Summary Statements and Preparing for Revision.”

The SUS Mid-Career Academic Surgery Professional Development Course is a one-day course which will occur on Jan. 31. Gregory Kennedy, M.D., Ph.D., will execute a presentation entitled “Should You Say Yes? Doing Everything is What Got You Here.”

AAS/SUS Surgical Investigators’ Course

The AAS/SUS Surgical Investigators’ Course is a three-day course that will feature many of UAB faculty members. This course will begin Feb. 1 and end Feb. 3.

The first day of the AAS/SUS Surgical Investigators’ Course will feature the annual surgical jeopardy game. Surgical jeopardy implements the same structure as America’s famous and popular gameshow Jeopardy. UAB Surgery has a history of placing well in the series.

The second day of the course will kick off with Herbert Chen, M.D., FACS, leading two discussions entitled “AAS Founder’s Lecture” and “Chair Perspective.” The “AAS Founder’s Lecture” will reminisce on his journey through academic surgery. Chen will also highlight several characteristics that made his career in surgery feel significant and heartwarming.

Overall Conference

The last day of ASC will spotlight Colin Martin, M.D., FACS, as he conducts a presentation entitled “The Foundation: Crafting a Compelling Introduction.”
