UAB Department of Surgery Associate Professor Annabelle Fonseca, M.D., MHS, has completed the Johns Hopkins Strategic Healthcare Leadership program, a four-month immersive experience that prepares experienced healthcare professionals for the next steps in their career.

UAB General Surgery research resident Tejeshwar Jain, M.D., was recognized for his project, "Targeting the gut microbiome improves anti-tumor cytotoxic CD8 T-cell response against hepatocellular carcinoma," which was nominated as one of the best hepatobiliary tract abstracts and will be presented at the plenary session at the Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract (SSAT).

UAB Surgery resident Marvi Tariq, M.D., and UAB Cardiothoracic Surgery Assistant Professor Kyle Eudailey, M.D., have been selected to present the project titled, "Hail Mary or new standard of care? Endovascular stenting for late diagnosed iatrogenic type A aortic dissection with malperfusion," at the American Association for Thoracic Surgery (AATS) Cardiothoracic Resident Case Report Competition at this year’s upcoming 105th Annual Meeting in Seattle, WA.

UAB Department of Surgery Division of Breast and Endocrine Surgery Assistant Professor Lily A. Gutnik, M.D., has been awarded a K08 grant from the National Institutes of Health for her project titled, “Global Breast and Cervical Cancer Control: Implementing a Bundled Screening Approach in a Resource Limited Setting.”

Vikas Dudeja, M.D., Director of the Division of Surgical Oncology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), has been elected as the president-elect of the Association for Academic Surgery (AAS). Dudeja, a recognized leader in academic surgery, will begin his term as president in February 2026.
