UAB Department of Surgery Division of Breast and Endocrine Surgery Assistant Professor Lily Gutnik, M.D., has been named one of the "Top 40 Under 40" honorees by Birmingham Business Journal.

The Top 40 Under 40 award is a prestigious prize that honors young leaders who have made significant contributions to their fields in Birmingham. To be eligible for selection, participants must live and work in the metro Birmingham area.

Award recipients join the Top 40 Under 40 alumni network, which includes some of the city's leading CEOs, influential figures, and accomplished entrepreneurs.

Gutnik's career is marked by her dedication to enhancing breast cancer care and improving surgical outcomes in underserved regions, particularly in Africa. Her work in global surgery addresses critical healthcare disparities by advancing research and initiatives in communities with limited medical resources.

An advocate for non-profit organizations, Gutnik serves on the advisory board of Know Your Lemons, which focuses on educational materials and awareness about breast cancer, and Discovering Hands, which trains blind women to become clinical breast examiners.

“I’m honored and humbled to be selected for this award and to help contribute to the Birmingham community,” Gutnik said.

The ceremony to honor Gutnik and the other awardees will take place at Iron City on February 13, 2025.
