The prestigious honor of Pittman Scholar recognizes assistant professors of fewer than five years for exceptional research achievements as well as their potential for future contributions in their fields.

The award is named after former School of Medicine Dean James A. Pittman, Jr., M.D., and highlights the school’s commitment to fostering innovation and excellence in medical research.

Each Pittman Scholar was nominated by their department chair and will receive $12,500 annually for three years to support their research and scholarly activities.

“It is truly an honor to be selected as a Pittman Scholar,” Broman said. “I am grateful for the award, which will support my lab’s ongoing efforts to improve the quality of evidence-based cancer care for individuals living with cancer and cancer survivors.”

According to the UAB Heersink School of Medicine, the Pittman Scholars program “exemplifies Heersink’s commitment to advancing medical research and innovation by recruiting and retaining top-tier scientists and physician-scientists.”
