Biography

Dr. James Donahue is an associate professor of surgery and the section chief of thoracic surgery at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Dr. Donahue comes to UAB from the University of Maryland School of Medicine where he had an active clinical practice focused on thoracic surgical oncology and served as chief of thoracic surgery at the Baltimore VA Medical Center. He is committed to resident education and served as the associate program director for the University of Maryland cardiothoracic surgical residency program. Dr. Donahue is a former Navy reservist and was deployed with a forward surgical team in Afghanistan in 2013. In addition to his clinical interests, Dr. Donahue also runs a basic science research laboratory. The laboratory is focused on studying post-transcriptional gene regulation in esophageal cancer cells as a way of identifying new therapeutic targets for management of this disease.

Dr. Donahue is certified by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery. He is a fellow in the American College of Surgeons. He is also a member of the American Association of Cancer Research and the Society of Thoracic Surgeons.
