UAB General Surgery Resident Madhushree Zope, M.D., M.S., has received the 2025 Association for Academic Surgery Outstanding Resident Research Award in Clinical Outcomes for her project titled “Feasibility of Post-Operative Telehealth for Pediatric Surgical Patients in Malawi."
Previously, Zope was selected for the 2023-2024 Integrated Networks of Scholars in Global Health Research Training (INSIGHT) program consortium and participated in the National Institutes of Health Fogarty International Center fellowship.
Zope had completed her second year of general surgery residency prior to beginning her academic development period. Through the INSIGHT-Fogarty Fellowship she was able to work on-site with the clinical team at Kamuzu Central Hospital in Lilongwe, Malawi to advance pediatric surgical outcomes research and build post-operative care protocols.
Mentoring Zope in her research on surgical care in low- and middle-income countries are Lily Gutnik, M.D., Associate Vice Chair of Global Surgery Equity, along with Bip Nandi, MBBChir, FRCS, Jed Nuchtern, M.D., and Casey McAtee, M.D.
