Newborn Follow-Up Clinic is located in Birmingham, AL.  The clinic looks at and follows the progress of children that are at risk for developmental delays.  At each visit different tests will be done to see if there are problems with their growth and development. The tests done will involve play activities like puzzles or kicking balls.  Different tests will be done depending on your child’s age. Appointments are on Mondays and Thursdays.

At each visit, your child may see:

  • Pediatrician

  • Physical Therapist or Occupational Therapist

  • Audiologist

  • Psychologist

  • Nutritionist

  • Nurse

The children have been referred to this clinic by a Neonatal ICU, Cardiac ICU or the child’s pediatrician.  They see patients under the age of three that meet any of these criteria:

  • Birth weight less than 1000 grams or 2 lbs 3 oz

  • Less than 29 weeks

  • Have heart defects

  • Have been on ECMO

  • Have been on cooling therapy

Helpful Tips for NBFU Clinic Visits

  • These visits may last longer than a typical doctor's visit. Expect 1.5-2 hour visits for children less than 2. For the 2 year old visit and older, expect the visit to last 3-4 hours.

  • Try to avoid having an appointment during their nap time and make sure you bring food with you in case they get hungry. Additionally, if your child is sick with an illness, we will want to reschedule the appointment. We want to see assess your child when they are at their best.

  • If you bring other children, please try to bring another adult with you to help watch them as part of the exam is difficult if other children are in the room.

  • Bring bottles, pacifiers, snacks, or favorite toys to keep your child busy.

  • Bring any hearing aids, braces, or assistive devices for your child

  • Bring a list of medications, questions, concerns, or comments about your child to share with the doctor or other members of the follow-up team.
