Over the past five years, the department has experienced significant growth in the number of full-time medical pediatric faculty. Currently, there are over 240 full-time faculty in general pediatrics and subspecialty divisions.
The Department of Pediatrics has a major commitment to research and consistently ranks in the top 20 among all departments of pediatrics in the country in NIH funding. Through research, we are contributing to a better understanding of the causes of many life-threatening diseases as well as advancing many new forms of treatment.
Our Pediatric Residency program consistently has a pass rate of 99% for both pediatrics and med-peds.

Ten COA pediatric specialty services are included among the top 50 in the United States: Pediatric Cancer, Cardiology, Gastroenterology, Neonatology, Nephrology, Neurosurgery and Neurology, Pulmonology, Orthopedics and Urology.
Children's Russell Hospital is a 750,000 square-foot, $400 million expansion facility on the health system's downtown Birmingham campus. The facility allows COA to manage projected growth in patient volume, provide for anticipated medical technology needs, and accommodate the planned consolidation and expansion of pediatric services.
Children's of Alabama is the only hospital in the state dedicated solely to the care and treatment of children and one of the 10 busiest pediatric medical centers in the U.S. It is one of only about 45 freestanding acute care hospitals of its kind in the nation.
