Board-certified subspecialists in the Division of Pediatric Allergy, Asthma and Immunology specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of children with allergic and immunologic diseases. Allergic disorders diagnosed and treated by division physicians include allergic rhinoconjunctivitis (hay fever), allergic and nonallergic asthma, urticaria (hives), angioedema (swelling disorders), atopic dermatitis (eczema) and allergies to foods, stinging insects and medications. Division physicians also specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of hereditary immune deficiencies (Primary Immune Deficiencies).

We are Alabama’s only all-pediatric allergy group.

As a joint cooperative of Children's of Alabama and the University of Alabama at Birmingham, we are leaders in comprehensive pediatric and adult congenital cardiac care for the people of Alabama and Southeast United States.

The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) is a 24 bed unit that admits children with conditions that require intensive or close monitoring. This fast-paced unit is a mixed medical-surgical, pediatric and adolescent unit that admits approximately 1,400 patients per year.

The Children’s of Alabama Emergency Department (ED) has more than 70,000 visits yearly and provides 24-hour care for children presenting with illness or injury. We are recognized as the major provider of specialized care for life-threatening traumatically injured and burned children. Children are defined as less than 19 years of age, although a medical screening examination is provided to any individual who presents for care. Stabilization and appropriate transfer for adult patients will be performed following current guidelines.

The Division of Pediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes covers a wide range of hormone-related disorders in children. We use a team approach to treat many children each day. About half of our patients are referred to the Division are for Type 1 Diabetes and Type 2 Diabetes.

Other areas diagnosed, followed, and treated by UAB pediatric endocrinologists include, but are not limited to, adrenal gland disorders, bone and calcium disorders, growth disorders, pituitary gland disorders, hypoglycemia, puberty disorders, thyroid disease, and genetic disorders.

The UAB Division of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition at Children's of Alabama provides comprehensive multidisciplinary evaluation and management of all pediatric gastrointestinal, liver and nutritional problems. These may include such common conditions as inflammatory bowel disease, liver transplants, metabolic diseases and nutritional disorders. The division provides both inpatient and outpatient consultative services. 

Each year the UAB Division of Academic General Pediatrics at Children's of Alabama sees thousands of patients from Birmingham and surrounding areas in our primary care clinics. We also see hundreds of families and children from all areas of the nation in our various specialty clinics.

Each year, about more than 190 children are diagnosed with cancer in Alabama. The diagnosis include leukemia, lymphoma, brain and spinal cord tumors, solid tumors of muscle and bone, kidney and liver tumors and rare childhood cancers. There are approximately 2,000 patients treated with serious blood disorders, including sickle cell disease and hemophilia that receive care from the center each year.

We are committed to a CURE. Alabama Center for Childhood Cancer and Blood Disorders physicians are actively working toward the goal of a cure for all children through research and development of innovative therapies.

The Pediatric Division of Infectious Diseases provides outpatient and inpatient care for infants, children, and adolescents with illness of known or suspected infectious etiology. Clinical care activities may include both infectious diseases that are difficult to diagnose and those requiring hospitalization such as bloodstream infections, meningitis, serious pneumonias, and viral diseases.

The pediatric nephrology team, which includes specialized nurses, nutritionists, social workers, family counselors and faculty, evaluate and treat children with kidney disease from infancy to adolescence. They care for those with urinary tract infections, hypertension, hematuria, proteinuria, glomerulonephritis, nephrotic syndrome, vasculitis, systemic lupus erythematosis and chronic kidney disease--including those who require chronic dialysis or transplantation.

Pediatric Neurology provides inpatient consultative services at both the Children's Hospital of Alabama and UAB Hospital. In addition, the service administers and directs a 8 bed inpatient Epilepsy Monitoring Unit. Patient diagnoses covers a range of problems including seizure disorders, neurodegenerative diseases, primary muscle diseases, developmental problems and acute encephalopathies.

The division provides ambulatory services through general pediatric neurology clinics at Children's Hospital and sleep clinics. The research program is investigating basic and clinical problems related to epilepsy, child development, genetics and biochemical diseases.

The Division of Pulmonary Medicine specializes in the treatment of patients with a variety of lung disorders, including asthma, bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD), cystic fibrosis, interstitial lung diseases, pneumonias, sleep disorders, lung problems related to neuromuscular disorders and ventilator-dependence.

The Division of Pediatric Rehabilitation Medicine at Children's of Alabama Hospital utilizes an interdisciplinary approach to address the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and management of congenital and childhood onset physical impairments including related or secondary medical, physical, functional, psychosocial, cognitive and vocational limitations or conditions, with an understanding of the life course of disability.

Concussion Clinic

Pediatric Rheumatology diagnoses and treats children with autoimmune disorders, including juvenile arthritis, lupus, myositis, scleroderma and various vasculitides. A variety of treatment options is available from intra-articular corticosteroid joint injections to newer biologic agents that target inflammatory cytokines.
