Our division specializes in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of stroke and stroke-related disorders through the UAB Comprehensive Stroke and Neurovascular Center. We are a Joint Commission Certified Comprehensive Stroke Center, with 24-7-365 stroke team, neuro-critical care, and neuro-interventional services.
The UAB Comprehensive Stroke and Neurovascular Center integrates the latest in medical technology with a multi-faceted approach including the:
- Vascular and critical care neurology service — An inpatient service dedicated exclusively to stroke victims and critically ill neurologic patients, staffed by a team of neurologists and nurse specialists.
- Outpatient services — Risk stratification and follow-up via the Stroke Outpatient Clinic, a division of The Kirklin Clinic.
- Diagnostic services — A comprehensive approach to the evaluation of cerebrovascular disorders, including MRI/MRA, CT, SPECT, cerebral catheterization and angiography, and the Neurovascular Ultrasound Laboratory.
- Telemedicine consultation service - Provides 24-7-365 emergency stroke care to patients at hospitals across the state.
- Heart-brain clinic - Provides specialized and coordinated care by both vascular neurologists and cardiologists.
Education
Two vascular neurology residency positions are available each year. This two-year fellowship provides extensive training in diagnosis, evaluation, and management of stroke, as well as care of critically ill neurologic patients.
Research
UAB is a NIH StrokeNet Regional Coordinating Center, one of 27 regional centers across the U.S. designed to serve as the infrastructure and pipeline for exciting new potential treatments for patients with stroke and those at risk for stroke and provide an educational platform for stroke physicians, clinical trial coordinators and stroke researchers. In addition, investigators in our division conduct clinical research in the areas of prehospital stroke systems of care, telemedicine, neurocardiology, intracranial atherosclerosis, and antiplatelet therapy.
