Celebrating 50 years of neurological innovation

This year marks a significant milestone in the UAB Department of Neurology: the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the department within the Heersink School of Medicine. The past five decades have been marked by exceptional leadership, hardworking faculty and staff, and incredible growth. Join us as we revisit the highlights across 50 years of innovation and discovery in the field of neurology at UAB.

Colleagues and friends,

For the past 15 years, I have had the privilege of serving as chair of the UAB Department of Neurology. In this time, I have witnessed the department continuously move forward, grow and achieve milestone after milestone in support of our clinical, educational, and research-driven missions.

Neurology was originally a division of the UAB Department of Medicine. It advanced to an independent department under the leadership of our founding chair, Dr. James H. Halsey, MD. In his  historical account , Dr. Halsey describes the first nine neurologists to practice in Alabama, starting with Dr. Wilmot Littlejohn in 1933. Dr. Halsey was the seventh, and Dr. Shin J. Oh, today a Distinguished Professor Emeritus, was number nine. “I have lost count since then,” Halsey concludes in his account.

Two other chairs had essential roles in the development of UAB Neurology. Dr. John N. Whitaker, MD, a noted expert in MS and neuroimmunology, led the department from 1985 to 2002. Dr. Ray L. Watts, MD, a movement disorders specialist and current President of UAB, served as chair from 2003 to 2010.

Today, our department boasts more than 90 faculty members, nine divisions, 50 residents and fellows, and over 60,000 outpatients seen annually—and we are still counting. From the days when we could tally our specialty’s statewide physicians on one hand to now, UAB has played a leading role in advancing the field of neurology in our region and beyond—from giving physicians a platform to follow their clinical callings, to giving scientists a space to broaden their research horizons, to supporting our patients with the most cutting-edge advancements in medicine. Across 50 years, our legacy is evident not only in historical accounts, but also in the lives of those who our work has impacted. Thank you for celebrating 50 remarkable years of the UAB Department of Neurology with us.
