Children’s of Alabama Department of Neurophysiology is an administrative division within the hospital, and is led by Dr. Monisha Goyal. The Department has been granted certification as a Level 4 Epilepsy Center, and is the only pediatric-specific facility in the state. All inpatient and outpatient EEGs are performed by staff from this department and interpreted by Neurology faculty. In addition, neonatal EEGs are performed in the RNICU of University Hospital, utilizing equipment and technical support from COA. These studies are also interpreted by Pediatric Neurology faculty. Besides EEG, the Neurophysiology Department provides intraoperative monitoring for epilepsy surgery, spine surgery, and dorsal rhizotomies.
Each of the three subdivisions of the Neurophysiology Lab (EMU, EEG Lab, IOM) have the highest accreditations given by the ABRET (National Board for Neurodiagnostic Credentialing and Accreditation).The EEG lab is one of only 3 ABRET accredited EEG labs in Alabama.The only dedicated pediatric EMU in Alabama, our 8-bed unit is designated as a Level 4 Center by the NAEC (National Association of Epilepsy Centers), the highest obtainable accreditation. It is also the only EMU in Alabama to be accredited by ABRET. Our IOM Lab is the only accredited lab in Alabama and the surrounding states
Neuromuscular assessment via electromyography and nerve conduction studies is also available under the aegis of the Department of Neurophysiology.
