As a new freshman, there are many things to process and take in. Here in the Office of First Year Experience, our mission is to equip students with the necessary resources to support their transition into college through programming, campus engagement, and supporting academic and holistic success during their first year at UAB.

1. HOW TO STUDY

Everyone learns differently and at a different pace. Now that you are in college, you will notice many differences between your high school curriculum and the curriculum you are learning now. In college, courses cover almost three times the material in half the time. Here are some tips to help you get prepared.

Review your material before class.

  • A quick glance at the subject and looking at your book will give you a better understanding of the material.

Ask questions if you’re comfortable.

  • Asking questions helps you to learn the material even better.

Take notes.

  • Taking notes helps you to remember the lesson in more detail.

Study a little bit every day.

  • If you study 30 minutes a day with no distractions, you will begin to remember the information easier.

Taking an active role early in your education will help you grasp your learning style easier. We encourage students to ask these simple questions during your study time… Who, What, When, Where, & Why?

2. HOW TO GET HELP

Here at UAB, there are resources for everyone. Feel free to ask for assistance! UAB has areas ranging from Academic Advising, tutoring resources, Veteran Affairs, Writing Center, and more! Our offices and many others are here to help you in any way possible. During your first year, you will also be able to learn more about our available resources through your First Year Experience course.

3. HOW TO GET OUT THERE

UAB has several organizations on campus, highlighting every area you can think of. Getting involved is such a vital step in your college experience. Yes, we know college is a major adjustment. One day you're in high school, and the next day, you’re suddenly plunged into a world of unfamiliar people and places, but so is everyone else in your FYE. Remember that many of your peers are also in the same courses as you such as chemistry, history, english, etc. Please take the opportunity to get to know them, form study groups, and even go to Starbucks. College is about forging new connections, including social ones!

4. HOW TO MANAGE YOUR TIME

Time! It’s the one thing that can slip through your fingers if not managed correctly. We suggest utilizing a calendar or a physical planner to keep track of important dates and deadlines. At UAB, you have a wealth of information coming to you quickly. Managing your time is vital to your success. As a young professional, it is essential to start with a plan in mind. Managing your time also helps you to balance everyday life, such as relationships, work, and academics, without feeling overwhelmed.

Pro Tip: Buy a planner and/or use the calendar app on your phone to create your schedule and set reminders. (Remember this will only be helpful if you actually use it!)

This list gives you an outline of how to prepare for your first year here at UAB. We welcome you and are excited that you chose UAB as your home away from home!
