SHP R&I Internal Support

We are here to support you throughout the grant application process. Following are programs and tools created for School of Health Professions faculty, as well as helpful UAB links.

Research Acceleration Holistic Program (REACH)

The REACH program reflects SHP R&I’s commitment to supporting early- & mid-career, as well as senior faculty members in academic research and scholarly development. REACH is designed to promote research acceleration in a holistic manner. To that end, REACH comprises structured mentoring and coaching and grantsmanship training to help you forge your unique path to becoming fully funded scholars and researchers.

Interdisciplinary Research Pilot Grant

The primary goal is to provide funding for SHP faculty, particularly those who need assistance in developing a major research project that will ultimately enhance their national reputation and that of their department and the school through development of future grant proposals, scholarly publications, and presentations. A core requirement is to foster interdisciplinary research collaborations among SHP departments and across UAB to conduct innovative research to generate extramural funding opportunities.

All funded projects must include faculty from at least two different SHP departments (Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Clinical and Diagnostic Sciences, Nutrition Sciences, or Health Services Administration). Multiple principal investigator (MPI) projects should help address complex societal issues and medical challenges by coalescing ideas, methods, technologies, and expertise from different disciplines. The mission of the SHP Office of Research and Innovation is to improve the health and well-being of individuals, communities, and society through the growth of team science. Research Pilot Grant awardees’ projects will be in alignment with this mission.

The application deadline is 11:59 p.m. CST, Monday, February 16, 2026. The award announcement: March 25, 2026.

  • Terms of Grant
    • Number of Awards: Up to two grants will be awarded annually.
    • Length of award: Up to two years.
    • Total award amount: Up to $50,000 will be awarded based on the merit and needs of the grant application.
    • Final report: Awardees must provide a 15-minute oral presentation to SHP faculty at an SHP Town Hall meeting on the results of the project at the conclusion of the award period, including their proposal for future extramural funding.
  • Eligibility
    • Faculty in any SHP department with new research ideas, those establishing new collaborations, and/or those needing more preliminary data to be competitive for externally funded grants are eligible to apply.
    • Projects must include faculty from at least two different SHP departments (Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Clinical and Diagnostic Sciences, Nutrition Sciences, and Health Services Administration)
    • Previous awardees of the SHP pilot grant mechanism (within the last three years) are not eligible.
    • Faculty are expected to be working toward an identified externally funded grant mechanism.
    • The contact principal investigator (PI) on the application must have a primary appointment in a SHP department.
    • At least one additional MPI must have a primary appointment in a different SHP department to meet the interdisciplinarity requirement.
  • General Criteria

This is an inclusive award whereby acceptable research areas in alignment with the mission of SHP include, but are not limited to, biobehavioral health–related research, rehabilitation research, clinical research, epidemiological or health-services research, and basic science research.

    • Proposals will be scored based on significance, innovation, impact, and scientific approach in alignment with NIH scoring criteria.
    • Priority will be given to projects that have the potential to make a substantial impact on the scientific field and the career development of junior faculty through the interdisciplinary efforts of the MPIs from multiple SHP departments.
    • Senior investigators may apply if they are moving in a new direction through a team science approach.
    • Successful research proposals will demonstrate a clear pursuit of external funding directly resulting from this application.
    • Applicants will be advised to apply to other internal grant mechanisms if there are more topic-relevant funding opportunities available elsewhere on campus.
    • Applications from junior faculty are encouraged to include a mentor or a collaborator who is senior-level faculty (at minimum tenured associate professor or equivalent).
  • Application Instructions
    • Use the Research Pilot Grant Requirements (PDF) to complete the application.
    • Use 11-point Arial font and 0.5-inch margins (i.e., NIH formatting).
    • Email applications as a single PDF with the subject line: SHP RESEARCH PILOT GRANT – [PROJECT LEADER LAST NAME] to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
    • Letters of support from the department chairs (one from each SHP department represented on the team), mentors, and collaborators (who are part of the team) are required to ensure the successful completion of research projects.
    • A brief description of your research and future grant submission plans (K or R grant mechanism and name of funding agency or a particular RFA you have identified) is required to assess the feasibility of impact through this pilot award. See next page for more details under the “Research proposal” section.
