The UAB Police Department is scheduled for an on-site re-accreditation assessment during the period of Dec. 9-13 as part of the process necessary to continue to receive recognition as a nationally accredited police department.
National accreditation is granted by CALEA (the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc.) after a review of the department’s policies and procedures. This on-site assessment verifies that the UAB Police Department is continuing to comply with the professional law-enforcement standards established by CALEA. The UAB Police Department was initially accredited in July 1995 and re-accredited in April 2003.
Agency employees and the public are invited to offer comments by calling 975-6209 between the hours of 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. on Dec. 11. Comments will be taken by assessment team members.
Agency employees and members of the community are invited to offer comments at a public information session set for Monday, Dec. 11, at 7 p.m. in the Hill University Center Great Hall located at 14th Street and University Boulevard.
Telephone comments, as well as appearances at the public information session, are limited to 10 minutes and must address the agency’s ability to comply with CALEA standards. A copy of the CALEA standards is available at the UAB Police Department. The contact person is Officer Zandral Washington at 996-2247.
Anyone wishing to submit written comments about the UAB Police Department’s ability to comply with the CALEA standards for accreditation may send them to the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement, Inc. (CALEA), 10306 Eaton Place, Suite 320, Fairfax, VA, 22030-2201, or call 1-800-368-3757 or 1-703-352-4225.
