Volunteers Needed for Clinical Trial Examining Treatment of Mental Health Problems Among Men Living with HIV
Do you struggle with anxiety, depression, or feel that your quality of life has suffered due to your HIV diagnosis?
Researchers in the Department of Psychology at The University of Alabama at Birmingham are conducting a clinical trial of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy for the treatment of mental health concerns among men who have sex with men and are living with HIV.
Volunteers will attend 8 weekly roughly 1 hour sessions of psychotherapy delivered via HIPAA-compliant Zoom by a doctoral student in Medical/Clinical Psychology at University of Alabama at Birmingham. Participants will receive $10 upon completion of initial intake session and an additional $15 upon completion of final therapy session. To participate, you must be an active patient of UAB's 1917 clinic.

Ketogenic diets for weight loss maintenance: Impact on energy expenditure and appetite in individuals with obesity
KETO-WEI study in individuals with obesity:
The UAB Department of Nutrition Sciences is conducting a nutrition study looking at whether a ketogenic diet can benefit appetite, while increasing energy expenditure, during weight-loss maintenance in individuals with obesity who have recently lost weight.
You may qualify if you are between the ages of 18-65, have obesity, have NOT been diagnosed with Diabetes, are NOT pregnant, are willing to consume meal replacements during the weight loss phase (4-6 weeks) and a prescribed diet during the weight maintenance phase (6 weeks), and are willing to travel to UAB for testing visits.
Qualified participants will receive free meal replacements, food/meals, personal health information, individual sessions with a Registered Dietitian, and monetary compensation for their time.

You May Qualify for a Breast Cancer Screening Study
The two types of mammograms in this study are:
• 3D tomosynthesis mammography, which you are already scheduled for.
• Contrast-enhanced spectral mammography (CESM), an additional imaging method.
Both screening options are available at our mammography clinic. Researchers want to determine which method is better at detecting breast cancer early in women with dense breast tissue.
What to Expect if You Participate:
• You will receive both 3D tomosynthesis and CESM mammograms at the start of the study and again one year later.
• Each visit may take up to 3 hours.
• The CESM mammogram is at no charge, while the 3D tomosynthesis mammogram is billed to your insurance.
• We will also collect information from your routine screening mammogram two years after you enter the study.

Who's eligible for the study?
If you have been diagnosed with depression.
If you are between the ages of 18-64
If you are currently experiencing a major depressive episode that has lasted at least 3 weeks but not longer than 18 months.

- Must be between 18 and 65 years of age and meet the DSM-5 criteria for a diagnosis of MDD.
- You are experiencing a moderate or severe major depressive episode of up to 12 months.
- You have been using a SSRI or SNRI antidepressant for at least 6 weeks and are having an inadequate response.
- You do not have a history of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), panic disorder, or eating disorder, according to DSM-5 criteria.

Are you a healthy African American between the ages of 18 and 60?
You may be eligible to participate in a research study looking at the effects of sacubitril/valsartan on how your body handles sugar. This medication is related to blood pressure and is safe to take with or without hypertension. Eligible participants must be healthy men and women, African American, and have no history of diabetes, heart disease or kidney problems. The study involves performing some exercise, taking sacubitril/valsartan, and collecting blood samples.

The Improving the Detection of Hypertension and its Control Study (IDH-MEGA Study)
In this study, you will wear a blood pressure monitor for 24 hours and take home blood pressures with the same monitor for 7 days. At the end of the study we will collect laboratory samples and you will have an echocardiogram (ultrasound of your heart). You will not receive any medications or have to stop taking your medications to participate in the study.
You will not be eligible to participate if you have any heart rhythm abnormalities such as atrial fibrillation. You also will not be eligible if you are pregnant or have had any changes to your medications in the past 2 weeks, or you are a shift worker.

Participate in Type 2 Diabetes Research
The purpose of this NIH-funded trial is to examine the effects of three different diabetes treatments to determine if they improve night-time blood sugars.
This trial involves:
- A screening visit that includes a blood draw, urine test and physical exam
- Treatment with Metformin, Insulin Glargine (long-acting insulin) or the experimental drug Dorzagliatin which is FDA-approved for research, for up to 8 weeks
- 2-4 inpatient visits/ including two overnight stays at the Clinical Research Unit at 15th floor of Jefferson Tower.
- All visits to be completed within a three-month period.
Study-related tests and procedures are provided free of charge. Participants will be compensated up to $2,500 for study completion. All participants must be diagnosed with type 2 DM and not be on any type of insulin therapy.

Improving Sleep in 12- to 30-Year-Olds with Down Syndrome

Are you diagnosed with polycythemia vera (PV) or essential thrombocythemia (ET)?
This study focuses on better understanding how diet influences quality of life in MPN patients. We will test whether an anti-inflammatory food regime can help alleviate symptoms and decelerate disease progression.
Participants will meet with study staff to collect non-invasive samples, undergo anthropometric and metabolic measurements, and answer study related questionnaires. Samples to be collected include blood and stool samples.
Participants will be compensated $50 for each visit and providing samples if simply continuing their regular food intake, or $90 each month if trying an anti-inflammatory food regime for 3 months and completing the study visits and providing samples. Participants who adhere to an anti-inflammatory regime and would like to continue a further 9 months may be eligible to continue participating with a compensation of $90 per month. Study participants in all groups would receive information related to body inflammation, vitamin D levels, and metabolism if desired.

Volunteers Needed for Minority Stress Counseling Study for LGBTQ+ Identifying Individuals
-Study includes up to 16 in-person sessions of weekly counseling for free
-Remuneration in the form of up to two distributions of $10 and $15 for completing two surveys over the course of the study ($25 total)

Our study is a counseling intervention designed to address mental health concerns related to identity-related minority stress. However, there are a few conditions that we do not think would be a good fit. If you are experiencing severe drug addiction, past year history of suicide attempt/self-injury, eating disorder problems, or struggling with psychosis you would not be eligible for this study.

The UAB Science of Child Development and Neurodiversity Lab is recruiting participants for a study on socio-emotional competencies across diverse populations.
This study includes children who are typically developing or diagnosed with specific learning disorders (such as dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia) and/or ADHD.
What will your family do?
• Caregivers will have a 30-minute online meeting to review the study and sign consent forms.
• Caregivers will complete a 30-minute survey, and children will complete a 2-hour survey online.
• Children will also take part in a 1.5-hour online cognitive assessment.
After completing the study, families will receive:
• A resource guide with tips to improve socio-emotional skills.

Learn more about the CT-388-104 Study testing the safety and effectiveness of a selective GLP-1/GIP investigational drug for those living with overweight or obesity with type 2 diabetes.
You may be able to join the CT-388-104 Study if you:
- Are 18 through 75 years old
- Have a body mass index (BMI) of 25 or above
- Have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes
- Have tried to lose weight once or more through diet and exercise but without success

PURPOSE
This is a pilot study to assess the feasibility of performing virtually administered art therapy research, as well as a preliminary study to explore whether calligraphy training affects anxiety levels in healthy individuals with mild to moderate anxiety.
TIME & LOCATION
All meetings and training sessions will be held on Zoom. Participation includes up to a total of 15 hours of time over 12 calendar weeks—an intro meeting, 4 training sessions, a debriefing meeting, and 15 minutes a day of practice--5 days a week for 4 weeks. Pending full recruitment, training classes will be held in January-February 2025.

Research study to find out if a new contact lens can treat nearsightedness in children
We are conducting a research study to find out if a new contact lens can treat nearsightedness in children.
You can be a part of this study if your child
- Is 8 to less than 13 years old
- Needs glasses or contact lenses to see well at far objects
- Is willing to wear contact lenses
The study includes 6 visits over a year, and your child will receive eye examinations, contact lenses, lens fitting, and lens prescription at no cost.

The purpose of this study?
- Calculate baseline data for Bioness Integrated Therapy System (BITS) and identify its clinical implications in treating visual impairments.
- Compare the baseline data of Bioness Integrated Therapy System (BITS) to Dynavision for visual scanning.
Who are we looking for?
- Healthy adults aged 50-59 without physical, visual, or cognitive impairment and with no history of seizures or balance problems.
- Adults who are able to walk without assistive devices and are English speakers.
What would you have to do in 60 minutes?
- Fill out a short survey for demographic data.
- Quick functional screening of upper extremities.
- Perform four tests on BITS.
- Perform four tests on Dynavision.

DISCOVERY of Risk Factors for Type 2 Diabetes in Youth

Participants ages 35-65 needed. Compensation up to $310.
Participants between the ages of 35 and 65 are needed for this study. The purpose of the study is to fill in what we don’t know about how schizophrenia affects people as they get older. We want to find out what we can do to help older individuals with schizophrenia live better lives. The study includes 4 visits over the course of two weeks. The screening visit will take 2 hours. The first study visit will take 3 hours. The second study visit will take 2 hours. The third study visit will take 9 hours. This study will include: a clinical interview, cognitive batteries, questionnaires and assessments related to your daily and psychiatric functioning, two 90 minute MRI scans of your brain, a fasting blood draw, and a urine drug screen and pregnancy test (for females). If you experience urine leakage and you are 65 years or older, you may qualify for the study.
We are assessing whether hip exercises can improve pelvic floor muscle strength and urinary leakage.
You will serve as a “control.” At the visit, you will undergo a routine examination (10 minutes) for urinary leakage and answer questionnaires (10-15 minutes).

A Phase 3, Randomized, Multicenter, Open-label Study to Investigate the Efficacy and Safety of Retatrutide Once Weekly Compared with Semaglutide Once Weekly in Adult Participants with Type 2 Diabetes and Inadequate Glycemic Control with Metformin with or without SGLT2 Inhibitor (TRANSCEND-T2D-2)
TRANSCEND-T2D-2 is a clinical research study for people with type 2 diabetes.
This study will test if an investigational medicine (the medicine being studied) can
help with blood glucose (sugar) and weight management compared with an existing
treatment for type 2 diabetes.
- Are aged 18 years or older
- Have type 2 diabetes
- Have been taking 1500mg or more of metformin each day for at least 3 months (with or without SGLT2i)
- Have a BMI of 25 or more
- Have HbA1c levels of 7.0% to 10.5%

We're conducting clinical research in depression to learn how individuals’ brain biology impacts response to treatment, with the goal to help people find relief faster. You do not need to already have a diagnosis to participate.

Investigating Racial Differences in Diet Benefits for Knee Osteoarthritis (DIRECT)
We are looking for people with knee osteoarthritis to participate in a study to examine whether a diet intervention can reduce pain and improve quality of life. The commitment to this study will last approximately 7 weeks and include the following:
- Five (5) visits to UAB where you will fill out questionnaires, complete a DEXA scan, blood draw or Quantitative Sensory testing. These visits will last anywhere from 1-3 hrs.
- Six (6) weeks on a randomized diet where we will provide three (3) meals and two to three (2-3) snacks per day.
Participants must:
- Be currently suffering from pain related to knee osteoarthritis
- Be free from other serious health conditions (diabetes, cardiovascular disease, eating disorders, metabolic disease)

CURB-2 Trial: We are currently recruiting adults who use cocaine and are interested in participating in a study to examine medications as a possible treatment for cocaine use disorder.
There are no approved treatments specifically for cocaine use disorder. We are looking for adults (18-65 years of age) who are using cocaine and who are interested in reducing or stopping their use. The purpose of our study is to test a combination of two medications for 2 months as a possible treatment for cocaine use disorder.
This study includes the use of a placebo, which looks like the medication we are testing but does not include any active medicine. Study medication and assessments will be provided to participants at no cost. Participants will receive compensation for their time and efforts.

Are you currently pregnant and planning to breast feed?
This study focuses on better understanding breast milk composition, the presence or absence of CMV in breast milk, and its possible transmission to babies. CMV is a common virus that most people in the US are infected with by adulthood. Participants will meet with study staff once a month for six months to collect non-invasive samples and answer a questionnaire. Samples collected include oral swabs from you and your baby, a small quantity of breast milk and a skin swab from you, as well as a urine and stool sample from your baby. Participants will be compensated up to $300 for completing the study visits and providing samples. Eligible participants may also qualify for additional sub-studies for additional compensation up to $800.

If you are 18 or older with a history of calcium oxalate kidney stones, you may be eligible to participate in a research study. The goal of this study is to better understand how vitamin C is related to oxalate metabolism, an element of calcium oxalate kidney stone disease and how body weight impacts this. Can Intermittent Fasting or Calorie Restriction Slow the Aging Process? Healthy Volunteers Needed!
Help us find out by joining our study. The University of Alabama at Birmingham, Department of Nutrition Sciences, is conducting an exciting research study, in collaboration with Pennington Biomedical Research Center, to investigate whether intermittent fasting or calorie restriction (i.e., losing weight) can improve health and slow the aging process.
If you are randomly selected to do calorie restriction, you may lose weight by eating less. If you are randomly selected to do intermittent fasting, you will fast for 16 hours per day and eat dinner by 6 pm about 6 days per week (1 break day per week). We want you to be successful: the study provides intensive coaching and support to help you successfully lose weight or practice intermittent fasting.
To qualify, you should:
Be 25-45 years old
Have a BMI between 22-30 Calculate your BMI here
Be healthy
Not currently taking any medications or supplements for chronic conditions
Not smoke, vape, or use tobacco products currently or within the last 6 months

Patients 15 and older with psychogenic non-epileptic seizures (PNES) without co-morbid epilepsy needed for study
The UAB Epilepsy Center is looking for participants aged 15 and older for a brain imaging study. Eligible individuals will have psychogenic non-epileptic seizures (PNES) without co-morbid epilepsy. The study involves one visit at UAB Highlands Hospital and will last up to 2.5 hours. Participants will undergo a brain MRI, complete questionnaires, and provide a small amount of blood. Agitation Associated with Alzheimer’s Dementia
Do you have a loved one with agitation associated with Alzheimer’s dementia? Is their agitation becoming overwhelming? Examples of some easily identifiable agitated behaviors are: restlessness, screaming, shouting, throwing things, resistiveness, constant unwarranted requests for attention or help, pacing/aimless wandering, kicking, hitting others or self, pushing people, hurting self or others, tearing things or destroying property. In this study, researchers want to find out if an investigational drug called AVP-786 is safe and effective (useful) in managing agitation in adults with Alzheimer’s dementia, when compared to a placebo. Intermittent Fasting and Light Therapy Study: Adults with Type 2 Diabetes Needed
We are looking for adults with type 2 diabetes for an exciting research study to see whether intermittent fasting and/or using light therapy can improve your blood sugar, improve your overall health, and reset your body clock. Participants will either eat early in the day, graze throughout the day, and/or use a special light therapy box or glasses. You may be eligible if you have type 2 diabetes, are 30-80 years old, are not taking insulin, and usually wake up between 5:00 and 9:00 am. The main part of the study lasts 16 weeks and involves two overnight tests in our clinic (which can be done on weekends, if preferred). Participants will receive $2400 for completing the study.

Adults ages 30-70 who are overweight or have blood sugar issues needed
We are looking for adults for an exciting research study to see whether meal timing can improve your blood sugar, blood pressure, and your overall health. Participants will be randomized to follow an eating schedule for 8 weeks. You may be eligible if you are 30-70 years old, BMI between 30-60 kg/m2, are not taking diabetes medication, and wake up between 5:00 and 8:00 am regularly. Adults with prediabetes, blood sugar issues, or a family history of diabetes are encouraged to apply. This study involves two overnight tests plus eating only food that we provide you.
