University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Nursing alumna Cheri Plasters, BSN, CCRN, received the Barbara A. McLean Contributions to Critical Care Nursing Lifetime Achievement Award from the Southeast Chapter of the Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM).
Plasters, recognized for her contributions to critical care at the hospital level and personal commitments to the profession, is a critical care Registered Nurse in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit at UAB Hospital where she has worked for over 13 years. She is highly involved in unit and hospital committees, projects and special initiatives.
In addition to her responsibilities at UAB Hospital, Plasters mentors students and new graduates, and she is an active member in her local chapter of the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses. Notably, she was instrumental in the campaign at UAB Hospital to recognize military service among patients.
“Every day we treat patients and have no idea they have served our country,” she said. “I saw the need and wanted to do something, especially since the challenge relates to UAB Medicine’s Core Values.”
As a nurse leader, Plasters has been a recipient of UAB Hospital’s Clinical Excellence in Nursing award and the UAB School of Nursing’s Jo Ann Barnett Award for Compassionate Care. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the UAB School of Nursing in 1984.
