BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Cynthia Willingham, a project instructor for Science in Motion at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), has been named the District Five Director for the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA).

In her new role with NSTA, Willingham will represent science teachers from Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands and the Panama Canal Zone on an advisory council that is made up of the association's 18 district directors. The advisory council serves as a counseling body to the NSTA board of directors.

Willingham was voted into her new position by NSTA members. She will serve a three-year term.

At UAB, Willingham oversees the chemistry division of the UAB Science in Motion program, an outreach service that provides teaching and equipment support to science classrooms throughout the Birmingham area. Willingham also provides professional development training to high school chemistry teachers each summer.

Prior to joining UAB, Willingham served three Birmingham-area high schools as a chemistry and science teacher. She is a recipient of the Birmingham Outstanding Young Educator Award and former president for the Alabama Science Teachers Association. She also is a recipient of an American Chemical Society Outstanding High School Chemistry Teacher award.
