Passionate about supporting the arts and giving back to the community? Join the University of Alabama at Birmingham Center for the Arts for a volunteer training session Thursday, Aug. 6, to learn about volunteer roles, connect with others and find out how to get involved.

The Center for the Arts is a collective organization for visual and performing arts at UAB. The Alys Stephens Performing Arts CenterArtPlay Community EducationUAB Arts in Medicine and the Abroms-Engel Institute for the Visual Arts provide the community with challenging and thoughtful experiences through free and fee-based events invoking a sense of creativity in all. 

The volunteer session will take place from 6-7:30 p.m. in the Alys Stephens Center, 1200 10th Ave. South. Meet and mingle with dedicated volunteers, meet the house staff, and learn about volunteer roles, such as ushers for concerts and events. AIM and ArtPlay staff will attend to share insight on their work. Attendees can also:

  • Tour the Alys Stephens Center
  • Learn more about AEIVA, Arts in Medicine and ArtPlay
  • Hear tips on how to create a welcoming experience
  • Access KultureCity sensory-inclusive training
  • Learn more about fire and severe weather safety routes 

“Volunteer work makes a positive difference in how our patrons feel,” said Summer Guffey, senior house coordinator for the UAB Center for the Arts. “From the generous smiles of our ushers to the talented musicians who engage with hospital attendees, volunteers make up the soul of what we do.”

Additionally, volunteering with the ASC comes with rewarding perks, including: 

  • Engaging with audiences from a wide variety of shows and events
  • Attending ASC PresentsDepartment of Theatre and Department of Music events free of charge 
  • Meeting arts-oriented people and being part of the campus arts community 
  • End-of-season celebratory reception for regular volunteers
