Theatre UAB Annual Festival of Ten-Minute Plays, shows at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 22, 24 and 25 and 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 26, in UAB's Alys Stephens Center Odess Theatre, 1200 10th Ave. South. "Venus," written by Suzan-Lori Parks, shows at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 10-13 and Nov. 17-20 and 2 p.m. Nov. 21, in UAB's Alys Stephens Center Odess Theatre, 1200 10th Ave. South. "Venus" is Park's gripping and theatrical depiction of 19th-century Hottentot Saartjie "Sarah" Baartman, a woman lured from her menial job in South Africa to tour the world as a sideshow exhibit. The New Yorker called "Venus" "a formidable experience: a gnarly but brilliant meditation on the ambiguity of race, history, the colonized imagination, sexuality and theatrical storytelling itself." "Lysistrata," written by Aristophanes, shows at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 16-19 and at 2 p.m. Feb. 20 in UAB's Alys Stephens Center Sirote Theatre, 1200 10th Ave. South. In Aristophanes' deliciously bawdy comedy, Lysistrata channels her frustrations into an extraordinary mission to end the pointless, interminable Peloponnesian War. Longing for the return of their soldier husbands and lovers, the women of Greece, led by clever Lysistrata, vow to stop making love until the men stop making war. "We Three," by Paul Shoulberg, shows at 7:30 p.m. March 2-5 and March 9-11 and 2 p.m. March 12, in UAB's Alys Stephens Center Odess Theatre, 1200 10th Ave. South.  Tickets are $15; $7 for students and $12 for UAB employees and senior citizens. "We Three" is the world premiere of the 2009 winner of the UAB-sponsored Ruby Lloyd Apsey Play Search.  In order to avoid prison, lifelong friends Jericho, Big Keith and Taz agree to Christmas season community service and participation in a mysterious university study. Tensions run high in this incisive comedy as the men are forced to confront issues within themselves and with each other. Set in New York City, "We Three" explores and challenges society's standard perceptions of morality, race, class and the meaning of Christmas. Theatre UAB's Dennis McLernon will direct. Passionate and restless Olga, Masha and Irina Prozorov dream of escaping the isolation and monotony of their provincial garrison town for more cultured, meaningful lives in Moscow. The arrival of a debonair officer turns their world upside down and further inflames their pursuit of happiness, resulting in a chain of circumstances marked by mystery, beauty and sorrow. About the UAB Department of Theatre

The UAB Department of Theatre has won the highest honors awarded to university theaters, including best in region from the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival (KCACTF). In 2008, UAB's production of "In the Blood" was one of three shows chosen by KCACTF from 300 in consideration nationwide. Faculty members in the department continue to work professionally in addition to teaching. UAB Theatre performances are presented at the Alys Stephens Center, UAB's own world-class performing arts center. This year the department celebrates its 40th anniversary. It is part of the UAB College of Arts and Sciences, home to academic disciplines that include the arts, humanities, sciences and the School of Education.
