Today, the UAB Blazers take on Memphis inside Legion Field, but before the game, another contest will take place outside the arena. The "Battle for the Bones" cooking contest will pit Blazer fans against Memphis fans to see which fans make the best barbeque.

The event will take place today, October 2 outside Legion Field. The judging will begin at 5:30 p.m. The winner will be announced during half-time. The game begins at 7 p.m. Note: "Battle for the Bones" contestants will check in at 11 a.m. and begin grilling shortly thereafter.

The contest, which began three years ago, was created as a way to celebrate Birmingham and Memphis, cities that are renowned for barbecue. Thirty-six teams of UAB and Memphis fans will compete for the title "Best Barbeque Ribs." The winner will receive a $1,500 prize. Last year's winner of the cooking contest was a team from Memphis. A prize also will be given for "Best Sauce." The football team that wins Thursday's game will carry the 100-pound Rack of Ribs Trophy home.

The day also will feature pre-game activities at Blazer Village outside of Legion Field. The activities will begin at 5 p.m. For tickets to the UAB vs. Memphis game, call 205-975-8221.
