BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Visual Arts Gallery at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) will present works by New Zealand Maori photographer Ross T. Smith, Oct. 10-Nov. 1, at the gallery, 900 13th St. S. Smith will speak informally about his work at 4 p.m. Friday, Oct. 10, and attend the show's opening reception immediately following at 5 p.m., at the UAB Visual Arts Gallery, 900 13th St. S. UAB Visual Arts Gallery hours are 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday-Thursday, 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday and 1-5 p.m. Saturday. The gallery is closed on Sundays and holidays.

Works from two distinct series by Smith, "Hemi Tuwharerangi Paraha" and "Stations of the Cross," as well as a series of his pinhole photographs, will be on show at UAB. The first is a series of images of a single subject, a Maori man named Hemi Tuwharerangi Paraha. The second is an interpretation of the Stations of the Cross, drawn abstractly from a number of images of New Zealand and presented as a work that is more than 27 feet long.  The third series of works on display are new pinhole photographs which have not previously been exhibited.
