BIRMINGHAM, AL — Michael Friedlander, Ph.D., professor and chair of the Department of Neurobiology at UAB (University of Alabama at Birmingham) has been selected as secretary of the Association of Neuroscience Departments and Programs (ANDP). ANDP represents virtually all of the neuroscience training programs in North America. Its goal is to advance education and research training in academic neuroscience programs by disseminating information about neuroscience education.

“Dr. Friedlander’s participation at the executive level in our organization contributes to the vitality and quality of neuroscience training in North America and around the world,” said Barbara R. Talamo, Ph.D., president of the association. “The support of the faculty and administrators of institutions such as UAB makes a valuable contribution to the academic establishment and promotes robust and innovative research in our country.”

The ANDP provides a forum for discussion of issues in training and research at both the institutional and national levels. The group focuses on issues of importance to the directors of training programs at undergraduate and graduate levels such as program content, new models for graduate training, employment opportunities and alternative careers, diversity and government support of training and research.
