BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB Travelers’ Clinic has been ranked in the March 2007 issue of Condé Nast Traveler magazine as one of the top travel clinics in the United States.
According to CondeNast medical editor Dr. Richard Dawood, he compiled the list of the top clinics from “his personal Rolodex of some of the best travel medicine specialists in the United States.” His list includes 32 “physicians and nurses…for whom I have a high degree of professional respect.”
The UAB Traveler’s Clinic, directed by David O. Freedman, M.D., is the largest travel/tropical medicine clinic in Alabama and serves Alabama as well as areas of Mississippi and Tennessee.
It offers services including highly individualized pre- and post-travel consultation with a specialist physician; all CDC/WHO recommended immunizations; malaria chemoprophylaxis when indicated; medication for self-treatment of travelers’ diarrhea and other common problems; detailed education and extensive printed materials on staying healthy abroad; 24 hour/day on-call service for patients becoming ill during or after travel; and a full parasitology laboratory on site. The clinic also teaches and conducts research on international health, and runs seminars in tropical medicine that are attended by physicians from all over the world.
Freedman, who is board certified infectious diseases and internal medicine and certified in tropical medicine and travelers health by the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, said the clinic is honored by this distinction.
“More people are traveling than ever before and we are pleased to be able to provide to Alabama the same quality of specialized service as do travel clinics in much larger cities,” Freedman said. “We understand the difficulty for primary care providers to keep up with disease situations in more than 230 countries and we enjoy serving the travel health needs of the people of Alabama, Mississippi and Tennessee.”
The UAB Travelers’ Clinic, the only site in Alabama that maintains at all times a full vaccine inventory, is located on the 4th floor of The Kirklin Clinic ®.
