How many residents do you recruit in a class?
We recruit 26 Pediatrics, 4 Med-Peds, 2 Child Neurology and 1 Combined Genetics-Pediatrics per year.

Can applicants send CVs, letters, etc for review prior to the application season?
Our Program Directors do not review information (CVs, letters, etc.) prior to applying for residency. We only accept applications through ERAS.

How do applicants know whether they have been offered a position in the residency class?
We offer positions only through the NRMP.

How do I know if I have an interview?
After receiving and reviewing applications, the Program Directors will send out invitations if you are invited to interview.

What board scores are required to interview?
We do not have minimum board score requirements, though we do have a very competitive program and higher scores can enhance your application as a whole.

Is there a cut off for the number of years out of medical school when applying to your residency?
We do not accept applications from applicants who have been out of medical school for more than 5 years.

What medical degrees are accepted by your program?
We accept applicants with either an M.D. (Doctor of Medicine) or D.O. (Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine) degree.

Do you accept International Medical Graduates (IMGs)?
We accept International Medical Graduates (IMG’s) into our program. UAB sponsors J-1 Visas only (on an individual basis). You must have a valid ECFMG certificate.

How many letters should I include in my application?
Three letters of recommendation are required in addition to a Dean’s letter. We also require a personal statement, medical school transcript and photo. We do not require TOEFL scores.

Should one of the three required letters of recommendation be submitted by the Chairman of Pediatrics?
A Chairman's letter is not required but is acceptable. We prefer that your recommendations be submitted by faculty members of your school who are well-acquainted with you and your medical education experiences, and who can provide knowledgeable references for you.

Only three letters of recommendation are required but can we submit more than three?
Yes. ERAS will allow you to submit more than three letters so any additional letters will be included with your application as well.

Does your program consider a minimal cut-off score for USMLE exams?
Passing scores for USMLE are required; there are no minimal passing score requirements. However, USMLE scores are considered an important part of the complete application, and higher USMLE scores offer a more competitive edge to your application as a whole. Applicants with more than two attempts to pass the USMLE are not likely to receive an invitation to interview with our program.

Do D.O. applicants have to take the USMLE exams?
No, we accept Comlex scores.

Do you offer observership opportunities?
Our department does not process observerships. If you are interested in doing an observership, you should contact the division you would like to observe directly.

Application Process
The UAB Pediatric Residency Training Program only accepts applications via the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). For more information about ERAS, please contact your medical school dean's office. International medical graduates must register for ERAS by contacting the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG).Applicants for the PGY-1 level are selected through the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP). The NRMP number for UAB's Pediatric Residency Program is 1007320C0. The NRMP number for UAB's Combined Med-Peds Residency Program is 1007700C0.
