Library and Learning Resource Center

Fellows can use the Neurology library and learning resource center to study, read, relax, surf the Internet, and conduct a journal search in the library. The library has many neurology reference books and journals, in addition to the on-line research tools available. The glass showcase displays important historical neurology examination tools, texts, photographs, documents, and faculty publications such as research papers and books. This wonderful facility is a prime example of the department's commitment to the residents and their learning.

Supervision

Dedicated time for supervision, mentorship, writing review, and support for case conceptualization is provided from directly from supervising clinical faculty. Currently, several faculty members are pursuing ABPP-CN certification. Dr. Knight is currently a board-certified clinical neuropsychologist and will meet biweekly with fellows for a formal mentorship session throughout the training.

Opportunities for supervision training

Our fellows participate in a variety of clinical teaching and supervision working with pre-doctoral graduate students in clinical practicums and interns on Neurology rotation. Additional supervision of undergraduate students who work with faculty and fellows on research projects is available.

Competencies and Evaluations

Fellows are expected to advance toward foundational and functional competencies during the fellowship. Our exit criteria follow the Houston Conference guidelines for fellowship training noted below. Evaluations occur every six months, corresponding to the end of each six-month rotation.

  • Advanced skill in neuropsychological evaluation, treatment, and consultation sufficient to practice independently
  • Advanced understanding of brain-behavior relationships
  • Scholarly activity (e.g., abstract submission, book chapter, manuscript/grant submission, test development)
  • Eligibility for state or provincial licensure or certification for the independent practice of psychology • Eligibility for board certification in clinical neuropsychology by the American Board of Professional Psychology.

Clinical Space and Support

All fellows have individual offices and a computer. The Neuropsychology Clinic maintains a full suite of test instruments, scoring programs, dictation software, and statistical packages. Psychometrists are available to help administer testing and score/table the results for fellows in some cases. Each fellow has access to the UAB Medical Library, which offers an array of resources, including numerous informational databases, and institutional access to an array of full-text electronic neuropsychology, neurology, and psychology textbooks.

Stipend, Health Insurance, and Leave

Fellows are compensated at least equal to the minimum NIH NRSA stipend level (PGY0). The current stipend levels are $56,400 for first-year fellows (PGY-0), with the commensurate pay increase for the second year and adjustment expected for FY 2025 as directed by NIH NRSA stipends. Individual health insurance coverage is provided; family coverage is available. In addition to official University holidays, fellows are allotted 10 days of paid vacation and 10 “professional days” each year to attend scientific/professional meetings. In addition, 15 sick days are allotted per year. The residency program adheres to the UAB Accommodations Policy for Postdoctoral Trainees. Additional information can be viewed on the Policies, Pay & Benefits for Postdoctoral Research Fellows website.

The department will fund a conference if an abstract is submitted, but if other professional funds are available, consider including them (e.g., for textbooks, EPPP, and conference travel even when not presenting). In addition to travel funds, $500 is available annually for professional funds, which may be used for books, tools, educational material, travel to meetings, and licensing fees.

We typically accept one fellow into our post-doctoral fellowship program every two years. The anticipated start date is between August 1 and September 1.
