Maria Grant, M.D., Professor and Eivor and Alston Callahan, M.D., Endowed Chair in Ophthalmology and UAB Comprehensive Diabetes Center scientist, was awarded the Research to Prevent Blindness (RPB) David F. Weeks Award for Outstanding Vision Research at the Association of University Professors of Ophthalmology (AUPO) annual meeting.

Andrew Hardaway, Ph.D., assistant professor in the UAB Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neurobiology, has been chosen as a 2025 Pittman Scholar by the UAB Heersink School of Medicine. Hardaway follows a long list of faculty members from the UAB Comprehensive Diabetes Center to receive this award. 

The notable honor of Pittman Scholar distinguishes assistant professors who have held the rank for fewer than five years for their exceptional research achievements and potential for future contributions to their fields.

Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists and dual agonists have changed the treatment landscape of obesity and Type 2 diabetes (T2D), but significant limitations have emerged due to their gastrointestinal side effects, loss of lean mass, and necessity for ongoing subcutaneous injections.
