Department of Clinical and Community Sciences
Clinical and Community Sciences extends the reach of UAB Dentistry across Alabama through community partnerships and collaborations with non-UAB clinics, as well as a new network of UAB-owned community-based clinics, with one site currently serving patients and another in development. The department is home to the National Dental Practice-Based Research Network and a biomaterials training program sought by learners nationally and internationally. Through this infrastructure, faculty, staff, and trainees work to improve access, outcomes, and public health.
Department of Endodontics
The Department of Endodontics is widely recognized for its faculty’s leadership in shaping the standards and direction of the specialty. Residents train in a rigorous clinical environment while engaging in scholarly projects that influence diagnosis, treatment innovation, and outcomes. Established experts and emerging investigators together create a vibrant setting for advanced education and clinical practice.
Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery provides advanced surgical care for complex conditions of the mouth, jaw, and face across UAB Dentistry and UAB Medicine facilities. The department includes nationally distinguished investigators, strong bench and clinical research programs, and rising scholars who create a dynamic environment for discovery and specialty training. Residents gain extensive operative experience alongside engaged faculty mentors.
Department of Orthodontics
With a reputation for excellence in education and research, Orthodontics advances understanding of craniofacial growth, development, and treatment outcomes. Partnerships with regional providers, including Children’s of Alabama, broaden clinical exposure in areas such as cleft and craniofacial care while supporting ongoing clinical and translational research.
Department of Pediatric Dentistry
Pediatric Dentistry focuses on the oral health of infants, children, adolescents, and individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Clinical training is strengthened through partnerships with Children’s of Alabama and the UAB Civitan-Sparks Clinics, where faculty and residents care for patients across a wide range of medical and developmental conditions. Our faculty provide evidence-based care tailored to each patient’s needs while advancing the profession through teaching, scholarship, and research. Graduates pursue careers in private practice, academia, and research, with a commitment to lifelong learning and excellence in children’s oral health.
Department of Periodontology
Recognized for national and international clinical leadership and impactful research, the Department of Periodontology advances the prevention and treatment of periodontal disease, periodontal regeneration, and dental implant therapies. Faculty drive discovery across clinical and translational research while mentoring students and residents in comprehensive, evidence-based periodontal care.
Department of Restorative Sciences
As the school’s largest department, Restorative Sciences anchors predoctoral clinical education and patient care while supporting advanced training in prosthodontics and maxillofacial prosthetics. The department leads the Hospital Dentistry (GPR) program and operates one of the region’s few in-house digital prosthetic laboratories, contributing to innovation in restorative treatment, technology, and clinical education.
