In response to the global COVID-19 outbreak, UAB Transportation has been taking extra steps to clean and disinfect Blazer Express buses. Regular protocol includes wiping down and disinfecting interior seating and hand rails at the end of each day, with interiors mopped and wiped down with antibacterial cleaning supplies every weekend.

As we continue to evaluate operations in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, UAB Transportation announces the following updates:

We understand you may have questions regarding parking fees for this semester – and any possible refunds. When an unprecedented and quickly evolving disruptive event occurs, it can be difficult to have all the answers right away. Going to online/alternate learning and limited business operations due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic is an example.

As a result of UAB’s ongoing emergency response to the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, and the need for hospital employees to have easier access to their work location, UAB Transportation is temporarily reassigning Express Lot 4 parkers to decks closer to the hospital. This will go into effect tomorrow, Thursday, March 19.

In coordination with university efforts to flatten the curve of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) epidemic through social distancing and online/alternative instruction, Summer and 2020-21 Academic Year student parking permit sales have been postponed until further notice.

Parking permits for the summer semester and the 2020-21 academic year will be available for purchase beginning April 1st. You can find a full list of permit options, as well as pricing, on the Student Rates page.

The rates are increasing this year, in line with the comprehensive transportation plan created in 2016. The plan was created to manage existing and future demand, create a more fiscally sustainable transportation system and improve customer service for the entire enterprise – UAB and UAB Medicine – that is compatible with the campus master plan.

Effective midnight March 13th, UAB Transportation is suspending several Blazer Express routes until further notice. This decision is being made to best allocate resources as UAB moves to remote teaching for the coming weeks.

UAB employees and students may now request Safety Escort and Blaze Ride service via the smartphone app, TapRide by DoubleMap.

“Technology is quickly changing how we get to, from, and around,” said André Davis, Director of UAB Transportation. “The introduction of this service is part of our comprehensive plan to move the campus towards the forefront of transportation innovation.”

Spring parking permit sales begin on December 1, 2019. If students do not have a permit for the Spring Semester, they may purchase a hangtag online.

The paid lot next to the Hill Student Center will be affected by Homecoming activities. Lot 5A will be partially closed on Tuesday and Wednesday in advance of the Hoops at the Hill event Thursday night. The lot will be completely closed Thursday and Friday.

There are fewer people on campus after 5 p.m. most days, and you may think parking in any open space is allowed – but beware you might still get a ticket.

This year, UAB Transportation introduced new zone options for the fall and spring semesters to reduce the time spent searching for a parking space. With the fall semester just around the corner, parking permits are limited and selling fast. Students should apply for a permit on July 15 to ensure their desired zone is still available, as exchanges may not be possible.

In observance of Independence Day, Blazer Express bus service and Highlands Shuttle service will not be available on Thursday, July 4. Safety Escort will offer reduced service Wednesday, July 3, and return to normal service at 9 p.m. on July 4. Gates will be raised at the 5th Avenue Parking Deck and 6th Avenue Parking Deck for medical center employees in express parking.

There will be no Blazer Express bus service or Highlands Shuttle service on Monday, May 27th, in observance of Memorial Day. 

The University of Alabama at Birmingham’s transit service will be operated by Groome Transportation beginning May 1.

The last day to return your Spring Semester student and employee parking passes is March 1st. Permits can be returned for refund by visiting the UAB Transportation office located at 608 8th Street South (Zone C, Express Lot 1).

Spring Semester parking permits go on sale for students and employees.

Meeting the needs of students, faculty and staff that were identified through a comprehensive parking and transportation study and campuswide survey, UAB Transportation will implement several pricing options for student and employee permit rates for the 2018-19 year, with rates increasing for certain locations.

Safety Escort has returned to normal service. 

Blazer Express, MARS, and parking facilities will return to normal service on Wednesday, January 30, 2019.
