City project to impact 5th Avenue South
Beginning Feb. 4, the City of Birmingham will expand construction of Birmingham Xpress Bus Rapid Transit stops and stations downtown, which could impact traffic flow. This work will be performed without totally shutting down 5th Avenue South or 18th Street. One lane will be open at all times. The project is expected to be completed by no later than April 1.

Beginning January 3, Motorist Assistance Roadside Service (MARS) will operate from 7:30 a.m. at 4:30 p.m. until further notice. This temporary change comes in response to recent labor shortages. We hope to resume regular hours as soon as possible.

Due to an expected lack of ridership over the winter break, Blaze Ride will be suspending service beginning Monday, December 13 through Friday, January 7, 2022. The Blaze Ride service will resume normal service beginning Monday, January 10, 2022. Eligible users should contact UAB Transportation to make special arrangements during this timeframe.
Blazer Express routes suspended during December
Beginning December 13, the Blazer Express North Green, South Green, and Purple routes will not be in service during the winter break. The routes will resume normal operations on the first day of the Spring semester, January 10.
The UAB Transportation office will be open weekdays 7:30 to 5 p.m. – excepted during UAB designated holidays. If you have questions or specific transportation needs, contact UAB Transportation at 205-934-3513 or
Student permits available December 1
Parking permits for the Spring 2022 semester will be available for purchase through the UAB Transportation website beginning December 1 at 8 a.m. You can find a full list of permit options, as well as pricing, on the Student Parking page.

The Blazer Express Gold Route will be suspended effective Friday, Oct. 1. Because of low passenger counts, we are choosing to suspend this route to better provide the most effective and efficient transit service. In addition, we are pleased to announce that an additional bus will be added to the South Green route on Oct. 1. Those who use the South Green route will experience shorter wait times with the additional bus.

UAB Transportation is launching a new reporting tool to ensure the safe and responsible use of electric scooters and bicycles on campus. The tool allows UAB Transportation and the City of Birmingham Department of Transportation to identify potential issues and work with the vendors to develop quick solutions. While these micromobility devices are convenient for traveling short distances, risky riding behaviors create an unsafe environment. In addition, randomly parked scooters and bicycles disrupt traffic, create tripping hazards, or block ADA access.

UAB Blazer Express will provide free shuttle service between campus and Protective Stadium for home games during the 2021 football season. The complimentary shuttles run continuously from the Hill Student Center to the BJCC Exhibition Hall (one block from Protective Stadium). Blazer Express again enforcing social distancing measures
Beginning August 9, Blazer Express reduced passenger limits to twenty passengers per bus. The shift comes in response to increasing COVID-19 positive cases.
Blazer Express still has the following safety measures in place:
- Masks will continue to be required on buses.
- Hand sanitizer will continue to be available on all buses.
- COVID-19 sanitization protocols will continue.

The nighttime Safety Escort van service will operate as normal on both Sunday, July 4 and Monday, July 5. Medical center employees with permits in the Express parking lots should follow the normal holiday parking plan and use the 6th Avenue Parking Deck.
Student permits go on sale July 1st
Parking permits for the 2021-22 academic year will be available for purchase through the UAB Transportation website beginning 8 a.m. July 1. You can find a full list of permit options, as well as pricing, on the Student Parking page.
UAB Transportation will continue to offer zone parking options. Please visit the interactive student parking map to note changes to various parking zones. Housing students will be able to purchase Zone A or Zone 7 dependent upon residence hall assignment, while Zone B through Zone G will be available to students not residing on campus.

Beginning June 1, Blazer Express will be increasing passenger limits up to seated capacity. The shift comes as the university continues its transition of employees back to campus.
“Our new seating limits allow for more efficient service for our passengers,” said André Davis, director of UAB Transportation. “We want our riders to be safe, so we have maintained increased measures related to masks and cleaning protocols.”

As the university brings more employees and students back on campus, UAB Transportation is reassessing our temporary parking solutions put in place during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Effective Monday, May 10, Express Lot 4 permit holders that have been parking in the 19thStreet Parking Deck and the University Boulevard Parking Deck will see changes. Entry access will now ONLY be allowed weekdays from 4-8 a.m. There will still be 24-hour access on weekends. Employees arriving outside of these hours should return to parking in your assigned Express lot.
If you do not have a current valid parking permit, please visit the UAB Transportation office for assistance.
UAB Transportation alters services for Memorial Day holiday
In observance of Memorial Day, there will be no Blazer Express bus, Highlands Shuttle, or Motorist Assistance Roadside Service (MARS) on Monday, May 31. The nighttime Safety Escort van service will operate as normal on both Sunday, May 30 and Monday, May 31. Medical center employees with permits in the Express parking lots should follow the normal holiday parking plan and use the 6th Avenue Parking Deck.
Blazer Express Silver Route Becoming North Pavilion Route
Due to road construction along 6th Avenue South, the Blazer Express Silver route will be temporarily modified effective Monday April 26. Thru traffic will be suspended on 6th Avenue between 16th Street and 18th Street. Thus, the Blazer Express Silver route will be a new point-to-point route between Express Lot 4 and North Pavilion Main Entrance using 5th Avenue South as our main corridor. The new line will be designated the North Pavilion Route.
