UAB’s campus workplace and educational structure has evolved during the past few years. UAB Transportation wants to understand how those changes have affected the way employees and students commute to provide the best possible service. So, we’ve partnered with UAB Sustainability and Virginia P. Sisiopiku, Ph.D., professor and Transportation Program Director, to conduct the 2023 UAB Commuter Survey.
The survey will be emailed to all employees and students March 21st and will be closed April 4th. Participation is voluntary and anonymous.
“The landscape of transportation to, from, and around our campus has changed dramatically because of the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Brian Atkinson, executive director of UAB Transportation. “We have hybrid and remote working options for employees and many more online course offerings for students. Our department needs to understand the impact of those options on our parking system and the services we offer to move people around our campus.”
The survey is a follow-up to the 2016 UAB Commuter Survey, which was also conducted by Sisiopiku. That survey identified where commuters were traveling from, how they chose their travel mode, and what transportation services they needed while on campus.
Sisiopiku said the 2016 survey, which had more than 10,000 responses, revealed that more than 88% of employees and 82% of students drove alone to UAB in their private automobiles. UAB commuters expressed concerns about on-campus parking but appeared open to consideration of ride-sharing, other sustainable transportation modes and telecommuting options.
“The data gathered from the 2023 UAB Commuter Survey will provide current information about commuting trips characteristics and user preferences and will help track the progress made by campus initiatives towards achieving reduction of drive-alone trips, a key UAB sustainability goal,” Sisiopiku said.
