Title IX Prohibits Discrimination on The Basis of Pregnancy or Related Conditions

UAB is committed to providing an environment that respects the dignity of its students, faculty, staff, patients, and visitors and is free from all forms of discrimination on the basis of sex, including pregnancy and all related conditions. Title IX specifically prohibits discrimination against a student based on pregnancy, childbirth, termination of pregnancy, or lactation. This includes school-sponsored extracurricular activities and internships, athletics, financial aid and scholarships, career counseling, and lab and clinical work.

Students

The Title IX Coordinator will work with students experiencing pregnancy or related conditions to prevent sex discrimination and to ensure that the student continues to have equal access to UAB’s education program or activity. If you are interested in receiving modifications for pregnancy or conditions related to pregnancy, contact the Title IX Office at 205-996-1340 or This email address is being protected from spambots. Employees

Employees who are pregnant or have related conditions are encouraged to contact their Human Resources representative to discuss accommodations for known limitations related to, affected by, or arising out of pregnancy, childbirth, or related medical conditions. Learn more information about Support for Employees.

Faculty and Administrators

It’s important to remember that providing modifications is a legal requirement. If the request fundamentally alters a course or results in an undue burden, please consult with the Title IX Office to develop an alternative plan. Students must be allowed to take time off of school for pregnancy, childbirth, miscarriage, termination of pregnancy and/or recovery for as long as their licensed healthcare provider says is medically necessary. That could mean a few absences for necessary medical appointments, or a longer leave of absence for a high-risk pregnancy or childbirth. This rule applies even if taking medically necessary leave would require an absence for longer than the school’s leave policy ordinarily allows. Students cannot be penalized for taking leave, and must be able to return to school in the same status they held before taking leave.
