Our campus community is committed to supporting employees and students who are expressing milk. This site will guide you through the University’s obligations and offer ways you can contribute to meeting these needs. Lactation Centers
UAB recognizes the substantial health benefits of breastfeeding and fully supports the decision to nurse. We are committed to providing the necessary support for breastfeeding. Our campus offers clean, private lactation rooms, and additional breastfeeding information is available in these spaces as well as through the link below.

Responsibilities
- The Pump Act requires employers to grant reasonable breaks for milk expression. UAB will ensure that students and employees have access to lactation spaces and reasonable time to express breast milk or breastfeed as needed.
- Access:
- Access to lactation spaces is coordinated by the Title IX Office. Lactation spaces are open to any member of the campus community (Faculty, Staff, Students), Patients and Visitors. To request access, send an email to

- Supervisors:
- Supervisors should familiarize themselves with the University’s Policy and the lactation rooms available in their building. Supervisors are encouraged to work with Human Resources for assistance with understanding their role in providing reasonable breaks for milk expression.
- Faculty and Instructors:
- Students have the right to take breaks to express breastmilk. Title IX safeguards against sex-based discrimination, including issues related to pregnancy and lactation. Faculty and instructors are encouraged to contact the Title IX Office to understand how to best support students who might require more time between classes for milk expression.
- Room Users:
- Users of the lactation space are expected to clean up after themselves. Should you encounter any issues with cleanliness of the lactation space, please contact the Title IX Office at
