SHP R&I Proposal Submission Incentive
The Proposal Submission Incentive (PSI) is designed to encourage faculty to seek a pre-submission review of their proposals prior to submission to an external sponsor. The faculty PI will receive an incentive in a discretionary account for any proposal that undergoes pre-submission peer review and is subsequently submitted to the funding agency through OSP.
Eligibility
- SHP primary appointment with a rank of instructor or above UAB is prime contractor
- Award will reside in SHP Investigator is PI or MPI
- PSI funds are available for new submissions that differ significantly from prior proposals or a single resubmission of a previously reviewed proposal
- New Submissions/Resubmissions must be modified at least 50% to qualify for an incentive
Incentives
The following incentives are for one investigator who receives total direct costs awarded to the School of Health Professions are at least $100,000 with an IDC rate of at least 8%.
- $1,000 for standard grant submission $2,000 for larger P, T, and U grant submissions For grants with two SHP PIs as multiple PIs (MPIs), both will receive the applicable incentive based upon the type of submission; larger teams will split the applicable incentive amount based upon the type of submission ($2,000 for standard grants and $4,000 for P, T, and U grants).
The PI will receive PSI funding in the month following the successful submission and acknowledgment by the funding agency.
Pre-Submission Review Process

You need JavaScript enabled to view it. .- Near submission ready proposal draft with all sections complete (aims/goals, summary, background/literature search, preliminary studies, approach/experimental design, broader impacts, intellectual merit as appropriate, and/or other sections designated in the RFA/RFP).
- PDF attachment or link to the RFA/RFP with agency-specific requirements and proposal guidelines.
- Preliminary budget – with subawards, cost sharing, F&A statement (if not at the negotiated F&A rate for on campus research).
- The above should be submitted no later than 60 calendar days before the sponsor’s deadline.
- For a proposal to NIH or NSF, the proposal review will be completed by the UAB CCTS (Panels - Center for Clinical and Translational Science | UAB).
- The PI should complete the Panel Request Form (CCTS Panel Request Form) and let the Associate Dean for Research (ADR) know when the Panel is scheduled to discuss your proposal.
- For a proposal where the CCTS does not have appropriate subject matter expertise, the ADR will work with research directors to organize the review panels. In this case, the PI should work with their research director to identify reviewers before the 60-day deadline above.
Summary of Submission Timeline
- E-form Notification (Notice of Intent to Submit Proposal) to SHP Research and Innovation at least one month in advance of the deadline using this form.
- Initial, complete submission to OSP: no later than 8:00 a.m. at least five business days prior to Sponsor Deadline.
- “Ready to Submit” FINAL Proposal to OSP: no later than 12:00 p.m. (Noon) one business day prior to Sponsor Deadline.
