Employees are required by policy to have their permit visibly displayed from the rearview mirror or on the dashboard, and those who fail to do so are subject to a $15-$50 fine. That’s about to rise, says Andre Davis, director of Parking and Transportation.
But first, the department will provide a free replacement during the month of March to employees assigned to gated lots and decks who may have lost their permit. To get a new one, call 934-3513 or email uabparking@uab.edu and provide your name and BlazerID; a replacement can be mailed to your campus address or you may pick it up at the Parking and Transportation office.This spring, the department will be stepping up patrols in gated lots to ensure that a valid permit is displayed. Cars parked in those lots or decks without the proper hang tag will be ticketed and their owners fined up to $50, Davis said.
Why display a permit?
The assumption that anyone in a gated lot/deck already has a permit is not necessarily correct, Davis says. Enforcing the policy will help ensure that authorized employees have a space available in their designated lot/deck.Having a permit visibly displayed also can protect the vehicle owner. For example, if car lights are left on or a vehicle is damaged or there is a need for evacuation, identifying and contacting the owner is much simpler, Davis said.“During the recent water main break, our staff was able to identify cars in affected decks by their tags and direct them into nearby lots that were managing the overflow,” Davis said.
