A simple classification is being introduced to help UAB Human Resources better target its communications to faculty and staff who may — or may not — be subject to new or changing polices, processes and programs.
University and UAB Medicine employees both requested clarification about which policies apply to them based on academic, administrative and clinical roles in their responses to recent employee engagement surveys. To provide that, UAB has assigned employees to one of two workforce groups — Workgroup A or Workgroup C — and each employee will receive an email that identifies the workgroup to which they belong.
“UAB is a complex organization with diverse responsibilities among its 23,000 employees, and policies, processes and programs may apply differently to academic, administrative and clinical roles,” said Chief Human Resource Office Alesia Jones. “This complexity creates challenges for Human Resources communications, and we recognize it can be confusing or unclear to some employees and units.
“This is our plan to improve communication and remedy confusion,” Jones said.
It is expected this will lend more clarity to policies, processes and programs that differ based on roles:
- Timing of merit increases
- Eligibility for Sharing in Success gainsharing program
- Performance management timelines and systems
- Engagement survey timing and eligibility

Workgroup A includes all faculty positions across the institution including the School of Medicine, non-clinical School of Medicine staff, staff in all other UAB schools and the College of Arts and Sciences plus UAB administrative departments and the Department of Athletics.
Workgroup C includes staff in the School of Medicine who provide direct patient care or perform clinical work as a regular part of their job, staff in the UAB Hospital and Hospital LLC, University of Alabama Health Services Foundation, UAB Health System and Callahan Eye Hospital.
